The correct title of the piece is "O Magnum Mysterium" (great mystery). I knew it was wrong when I wrote it before and intended to go back to correct it and got sidetracked.

It's a matin, so perhaps the Christmas Eve mass isn't the right place for it

(We used to sing it at the 6 o'clock mass on the first Christmas Day, the original Gregorian version - which was liturically even too late  .)

Shoot me.

If you are a sociopath, as I suspect, that would be the correct thing to do.

To senarios exist:

1) You don't know what a sociopath is, but know it's a easy way to negitively brand a person.

2) You know what a sociopath is, but choose to use the word incorrectly anyway.

I'm getting bored with your threats. Happy holidays.

Uh, punk dude, you are the one threatening me - and my rights under 1A, by trying to tell me I shouldn't wish anyone "Merry Christmas" and instead should use your schmucky little "Happy Holidays" instead.

Grow up. Go buy a clue. You may think you're smart, but I've got more common sense in the tip of my broadhead than you do in your entire body.

Rolling Eyes common sense Rolling Eyes

When have I told you what you should say? Have I told you you can't or shouldn't wish anyone a Merry Christmas? I've only made the point that it's ridiculous to get upset when people say "happy holidays."

You're undeserved and abused rights are intact and unthreatened for yet another year. Imagine that.

Well we Protestants, especially us really liberal ones, are pretty flexible about things like that. In some of our Advent music since Thanksgiving, we just changed some words in the lyrics so they reflected more Advent and less Christmas. I figure God can bless others through us without being real strict about propriety. Smile

Certainly.

And many American Christians do not distinguish between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as being important. Many Americans have their actual celebration at other times as a matter of convenience for working or travelling family members. It isn't as if December 25 is the actual date of Christ's birth anyway. So some latitude in the forms of and/or timing of the celebration of the event seems quite appropriate to many of us not even withstanding the differences in time zones and dates around the world. New Year's Day comes a lot earlier for you than it does for us for instance.

True. There are so many interpretations of the piece and so many different versions--it has been seriously modernized by some arrangers--that the version he cited isn't the one we sang anyway. But it was a small thing so I didn't see any reason to get into it.

Linda Ronstadt's version is far simpler than the one we did though:

O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum
O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum
Ut animalia viderent Dominum natum
Viderent Dominum natum
Jacentem in proesepio, jacentem in proesepio

O beata virgo, cujus viscera me ruerunt portare
Dominum Jesum Christum

Alleluja, Alleluja, Alleluja
Alleluja, Alleluja, Alleluja
Alleluja!

Well, a) I know Latin and b) I not only the lyrics of that choral but also the background.

And since I've posted on the thread from the beginning onwards - I get email updates. Like you, Tico - or why else did you write that response?

Just shows how much growing up you have to do.

Don't fret, just come back in a few years.

I just went back and reread this thread. As I thought, I have never once told another person that they can't tell someone "Merry Christmas."
