Which are better for self defense ?
Revolvers or automatics ?
In my opinion, from my personal experience,
automatics jam too much and that can have fatal consequences, in a pinch.
Revolvers are more mechanically reliable.
I believe that the optimal choice is a caliber .44 special
double action/ single action revolver ( or 2 ).

Wheel guns are far more reliable in any situation, they shoot a bit "harder" as well.
I've been warned that if you leave a clip loaded for a prolonged length of time, the spring will lose its ability to force the rounds up into the pistol.
The only drawback to a revolver that comes to mind is the number of shots you have. Most automatics will have twice as many of shots as a revolver, and reloading is much quicker. So if you think you'll be in a lengthy gunfight, go with the automatic. If you want a firearm to give you a sense of security, and maybe fire one or two rounds, then go with the revolver.
I'm a revolver guy, myself, but good lord are you gonna make some new friends soon. Shixa...
Oh, nevermind, it's you David. You already know all the local shooters...
Apparently the speed shooting champions prefer revolvers to semi autos, and having seen videos of some of them, I can understand why. I doubt they'd get the same accuracy from semi's, and definitately not from auto's
The plain truth is that automatics (good ones) are more reliable than revolvers. Go with either a .45 auto cocked and locked, or a good quality double action auto, if you are willing to get a reasonable amount of proficiency. You do not want to fumble for the safety when you're a bit stressed.
A revolver may, just may be faster for the second shot. The person who can make it perform to its limit is as common as a baseball player who bats .300
Thank you, David for not mentioning shotguns. They are just terrible as a primary home defense weapon.
?
oh i get it, this should be under comedy right?
very droll
No, Steve. Really, shotguns are vastly overrated.
Shotguns mess up the house too much. Revolvers are best because they don't jam, but one needs to go to shooting range once in a while in order to handle them right. There's nothing worse, I imagine, than a jammed gun in a crisis. And I can't imagine a situation where I would be involved in a gunfight. But I CAN imagine the possibility of having to shoot a home invader up close. But the day I saw the film, Clockwork Orange, I have been armed--at home.
I have always preferred cannons. Admittedly slow-loading, but very effective at close range.

Good god, this may just be the most philosophical thread I've ever seen.
You gave me a lot to think about. Thank you David.
