Date-Nut Bread

1 1/2 cups water
1 8 oz package dates, chopped
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup granulated sugar
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons butter
1 egg
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
1 cup chopped nuts

Boil water; pour over dates and butter. Let cool.
Mix remaining ingredients together; stir in cooled date mixture.
Grease the bottom of a 9x5x3-inch loaf pan.
Pour into pan; bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 55 to 65 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool slightly then loosen the sides and remove to a rack to cool completely before slicing.
