Can anyone help me find the lyrics to the song that Sydney Poitier sings in the movie The Defiant Ones?
My wife and I were just laughing about the "Bowlin' Green; Sewin' machine!" song, and trying to remember how it went, and its drivin' me nuts that I can't find any information about it.
Read this script, maybe it will help :
The defiant ones - script
I like Sydney Poitier...
I would like to see those lyrics, too.
Defiant ones
Are these the lyrics, snood?
So, these aren't the lyrics he sings at the beginning and at the end of the movie?
Long gone
Ain't he lucky
Long gone
To Kentucky
Long gone
What I mean
Long gone Sam on a bowlin' green
Bowlin' green
Sewin' machine
Sewin' machine
Sew so fast
Sew eleven stitches
In a little cat's tail
I left my home in Nashville
A-look a-here what I got, Jack
A-twenty long years on a chain gang
A-sweatin' and bustin' rock
A judge, he come from Memphis
A-put me in the pen
If I ever see his face once more
He never get home again
That judge be long gone
To Kentucky
Long gone
Don't mean maybe
A long gone
What I mean
A long gone judge on a bowlin' green
Bowlin' green
A sewin' machine
A sewin' machine
YES! those are the lyrics.
Thank you! Now (pushing his luck, he said), do ya know who wrote 'em?

Excellent, awall, and welcome to A2K and the film forum.
I just saw "the Defiant Ones". Great movie; the friendship and loyalty that developed from hate and anger - classic ending.
