Can anyone recommend a pop up stopper (preferably a freebie) that actually works? I've currently got panicware, but on some sites it's hopeless.

Thanks in anticipation

Why isn't panicware working for you?

Google's toolbar is coming out with a pretty good one soon. It's in beta right now.

Hi craven,

I was probably being a bit harsh there, it works just fine on most sites, but on some sites not at all.

Also it stops me opening legitimate pages and I have to continually click twice- the second time holding down control.

Perhaps I'm being a bit too picky, I'll take a look at your suggestion though. Cheers.

Well some sites use workarounds. It's hard to have both.

With popup blocking the trick is to get the balance between allowing ones that the user spawns through an action and disallowing the ones that are not your doing.

Some sites wait till you click something to spawn their popups and then flood you.

You just said you want the "legit" ones to be allowed and most software blockers differentiate this by waiting for a click from you.

Anywho, Google has some neat tricks to deal with this. Check it out.

That google tool bar won't stop the randomly arriving advertising pop-ups which come roaring in all day long. When i'm not on-line, i turn off the moden, because i get tired of having my games or document-writing interrupted by them.

Setanta,

Those are not browser based. Those have nothing to do with popup stoppers and if you want to stop those you just need to turn off the messenger client.

Setanta,

To stop the popups that plague you do the following:

Use a firewall, this will block the incoming messages.

OR

Switch off Messenger Service (this is a network communication service not to be confused with IM programs that is meant for use with network administrators, spammers have taken it over):

Windows XP

1. Click Start->Control Panel

2. Click Performance and Maintenance

3. Click Administrative Tools

4. Double click Services

5. Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"

6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.

7. Click the STOP button.

8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar

9. Click OK

Windows 2000/NT

1. Click Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->Services

2. Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"

3. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.

4. Click the STOP button.

5. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar

6. Click OK

Thanks, Boss--i find it bizarre and almost impossible to construct the firewall i want with windows nt. I've got no problem at work, where i block almost everything, which is as it should be. At home, though, i visit lots of sites which require that i accept cookies, and i've not be able to find my way around this in windows.

popupstopper
Alrighty - I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm perfectly comfy back here with my *ancient* computer and *ancient* software. I have Windows98 and have not bothered to upgrade IE to IE6.0. I have proxomitron which works pretty well . . . As for panicware - I like the older version BETTER than the newer! By the way, with IE6.0, there's a popup stopper that I found (I don't have links right off hand for anything but just run a google search) SMS FreeSurfer MK II or something like that. WORD OF CAUTION: It works beautifully on IE6.0 & even has an option to LOCK your homepage (thus keeping you safe from browser hijackers). HOWEVER, if you have something like IE5.0 (like I have), hoo boy - IT IS a browser hijacker in itself! It changed my homepage to sonic.net. And it was LOCKED as that. So I don't know, could be something like spyware. Run a search on it, if it's not, and if you have IE6.0 or better . . . then it works quite well! Very Happy By the way, uses the same idea as Panicware (hold CTRL to open a window). One last note - PROXOMITRON - is NOT spyware, not adware, may be a bit confusing though for the less knowledgeable. (If you have questions, refer to the extensive help manual or just drop me a line) Smile . . . Proxomitron though is very nice because there is not only an option to block popups, it can restore popups AFTER the page has finished loading (which means that you wouldn't have to hold CTRL to click a link!)

Yup, and they also do another thing that people often get software to do: Fill in forms.

The info is strored on your computer and though the occasional paranoid lunatic calls Google an ad-ware peddler they are nothing like Gator etc.

Google defined the useful broswer toolbar and everyone else is playing catch up.

Well, turning off the messenger service does nothing to stop the advertising pop-ups . . .

Nope, thing is, a popup stopper won't stop the messenging service spam and turning off the messenging service won't stop browser popups.

But if you are getting browser popups while you are not surfing then you ahve some scumware on your puter and should run spybot to remove it.
