Cruise control won't work

I have a 1996 GMC pickup that the cruise control has stopped working. It got to where it was working part time and then stopped working altogether. What do I need to check to repair this problem.

First, see if the speedometer is also on the fritz. They are related, and if one works and the other doesn't, that might give you a clue. That is, if both are out, it may only be a bad wiring harness. If it's just cruise control, it could be expensive.
