SHANGHAI (AP) ?- Germany won its second straight Women's World Cup on Sunday, defeating Brazil 2-0 behind second-half goals by Birgit Prinz and Simone Laudehr.
Prinz scored in the 52nd minute and Laudehr added a cushion late in the game, helping Germany become the first women's soccer team to successfully defend its title in the World Cup or Olympics.
Brazil star Marta, who had seven goals in the tournament, had a chance to tie the game in the second half, but her penalty kick was stopped by diving German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer.
Germany managed to hold off flowing attacks by Brazil, which routed the United States 4-0 in the semifinal. In the third-place game Sunday, the U.S. defeated Norway 4-1 behind two goals by Abby Wambach.
Germany set several records in winning the top prize in women's soccer. Germany is the first team to go through a major senior competition without yielding a goal, outscoring the opposition 21-0.
Germany has not given up a goal in 619 minutes in World Cup play. The last goal was scored four years ago in the finals against Sweden. China held the old record of 442 minutes.
The Brasilians actually played a super football, but we didn't do bad, too, .... and made the goals!
Congratulations Germany! I didn't get to see the game -- hoping to catch a replay.
Go Germany!!! Seems like the womens team is a hell of a lot better
than the guys who made (only) third last year.
My daughter, an avid soccer player, is ecstatic over this news.
@Region Philbis,
Yeah, the US girls are something else - great players!!! Go USA!!
They game has started....
Well done Walter, we were very pleased to avoid you and play France. Then France knocked us out on penalties. You win a lot, we get knocked out on penalties A LOT.
I cannot conceive of any reason
that anyone shoud CARE about who wins ball games. Pointless.
@OmSigDAVID,
it takes all kinds to make the world
(cup) go 'round, dave...
tough loss for
US.
congrats to japan.
they need something to cheer about...
@Region Philbis,
My daughter was talking to a Japanese girl on line when they won, she was very pleased. My daughter was more pleased about her Japanese. It does leave a bit of a taste in your mouth when you lose on penalties though.

I see it the same way! Plus both teams played so good, they gave us a great
game!
@CalamityJane,
I'd liked it, if the better team, the USA had won.
But it's just a game ...
