Boida, you think I had nothing better to do? A whole afternoon I was schlepping through this thread. The posts by Cav (alavasholom) made me want to cry.

Phoenix, I actually thought twice about the resurrection because of that. But he was wonderful and funny. Why not enjoy again? A shanda I hope I didn't commit.

For me, a laugh that doesn't go right into your pupick, that doesn't make your kishkes hurt, is not a laugh by me!

Did you are realize, when you want to call someone something nasty in Yiddish, more often then not you schlep out a word beginning with "sh"?

shmendrick
shlemeil
shlemozzel
shlepper
shmootz
shnook
shlock
shmuck
shmegegi
shmo
shnorrer
shlub (also zhlub, if you want to be technical)
shlump
shlumperdik

Sh verbs are often perjorative:

shmutzik
shmeer
shlecht
shlak

So what did you expect? In Yiddish, even when you are being nasty, you sound funny!

Phoenix, I noticed that sh thing when I was a kid. The old keppele was operational, even back then. I love those sh words, especially the shm ones. Very onomatopoetic. (I love that word, too, even without the sh or shm.)

shmutzik -dirty- Usually spoken by Jewish mothers to little kids, who have just dirtied their new outfits.

shmeer - to bribe

shlecht - bad, lousy

shlak - lousy merchandise

Yes, a shmear is a bribe. It's also what you do with cream cheese on a bagel.

My Aunt Bessie once said that a schlemiel was a shmoe with ear flaps. Who could argue with such logic? Not me. Even if she was wrong, she was not someone to argue with. Take my word for it.

A genuine character was my Aunt Bessie. Don't mess with Bess.

Hooray! The Hebonics thread is back! Very Happy
Thanks, Roberta, this is my No 1, all time favourite A2K thread! (And I'm not even Jewish! Go figure. Confused ) I wish I could talk Hebonics talk myself, but it doesn't come naturally to me, sadly. But never mind, reading your discussions is a pure delight, you guys! You are so funny! Carry on, please! Very Happy

Never mind the 'sh' words. It's when you come to the 'zh' words that the tsores start. Shlemiel, shlemazel, what's the big deal. But a zhlub now, that's someone you don't want to be.

No? Pray tell, Andrew, just what is a zhlub? And better still, can you name a few?

I really like this saying:
Ojch gesunt kon onschteken.

It's really easy for a German speaking person to understand - not only due to the similarity of soundin but most words are German resp. used in German

nimh, did you ever hear Nikitov? (That's a Dutch Yiddish folksong ensemble, playing Gypsie style jazz.)

They are on stage during the Sepharad 2005 in Munich these days.
