My brother wants to install a fireplace in his living room wall. But he wants to be able to fire/clean ashes out through a second door in the fireplace on the outside of the house. Has anyone heard of a two sided fireplace like that or could you point me in the right direction? Thanks.
It's usually called a "see-thru" fireplace. You can see-thru to whatever is on the other side.
I don't think I've seen one installed as indoor/outdoor but Vermont Castings has prefab gas fireplaces (their "Chateu Vista" line) that they say can be used that way.
I can't image that it would be a very energy efficent setup.
I think that what he is looking for is an ash dump in the base of the fireplace that dumps into a pit that is accessible from the outside.

*nods* That was my first thought too. He did mentioned "fire/clean ashes" and the only way I can see to start the fire from outside would be a see-thru.
If they are just looking for the ash dump outside, that's easy. It's done all the time.
Question about fireplaces
Thanks for the replys. Yeah it would be the same as if you took two fireplaces and put them end to end, but he doesn't want a see through. He wants a metal door on the side that is to the outside. Is there any sites that would have pictures of these fireplaces or something like it that I could show him.
