The carpet is somewhere around Pollen or Eggnog.
I started looking around at color wheels. Really like a dark, almost brown, orange. Leatherish.
Thinking about how it would look with a sponge finish to lighten it up and give it some texture/depth.
Maybe with some purple mixed into the glaze?
I'm not digging the slate blue.... too much like staring at my computer....
Maybe an aqua or turquoise?
And thanks, everyone, on your input.
Even if I go a different direction, I like being pushed to consider new ideas.

I wouldn't recommend using anything turquoise-y/leather-y with this - you could end up with a bit of a southwest cliche effect.
Unless you want to be inside a room that looks like a concha belt on a big-haired lady.
Silver is a relative term. More of a dingy grey.
The greens from this page would look great as your home office wall decor.
You can see the entire color wheel from many paint brands here:

You could also consider the colors in the photo Dys posted here for a southwest scheme:

That's kinda the orange/purple combo I was talking about.
The greens you posted are a bit too yellow for me.
I like dark too, drew dad, even though I'm going for lighter here in this new place - and agree you can keep it from being deadening with some techniques like sponging.
Try a splotch of the color that attracts you, what the hell.

These are really cool colors and I like them very much as well. I'll be doing a lot of painting the next few years so I'll be keeping an eye on this thread :-D
looks like semolina or august sunset might be close.... remember the colors will come out a lot darker then what they look like on the sample. i learned that the hard way. the "Fireside" looked like a light gentle yellow with a hint of orange to me. It was deep and rich dark yellow that looked orange in the corners and shadows. I loved it, but definitely dark. Even the semolina would probably turn out dark.
You'll find more southwest inspiration here.

Take a look at the comforters for similar orange and purple color combinations.
Gotta be careful with southwest. It's really easy to do badly.
Update:
So, I'm now looking at a dark brown base with either a tan or burnt orange sponge glaze....
Base color is Tobacco Road by Glidden. Still working on the accent coat.
Someone recommend for "Tobacco Road" either "Billiard" (green) or "The Beach" (tan), also from Glidden. "Fiesta Orange" would work too.
I'll take a look at those on the Glidden site.
I'm having trouble deciding....
Now I'm thinking about something bolder, like red/orange or blue/aqua.
Couldn't find Billiard. Fiesta Orange is nice; coordinates well with Tobacco Road.
How do you think it'd look as a faux finish?
Well, don't ask me - my walls are orange
I'm not a fan of faux finishes, so that let's me out of the comment range. I prefer daylight on a wall as it happens.
Drew Dad...the walls don't all have to be the same color.
In fact, I'd find a room with only one color a little boring.
How about doing 2 walls the lightest color, 1 a couple of shades darker, and the 4th wall a totally different contrast color. In my livingroom, library, I've got a wheat sort of color, on another, bronze and an accent wall in dark red.
play with it.
Drewdad - Because you are concentrating on this color issue, you may have started noticing things in the colors you like. It may seem like everywhere you look now there is tobacco road with orange, blue, purple...
Find a "piece" you like and go with that. Walk through the pottery and dish section of a department store that carries nice things. Go to the bedding, bathroom and curtain sections. Walk through the mall window shopping, fall clothes should be coming out on display and they will have the colors you are considering. If you find a piece of pottery, a frame, a whatever (except say a womans dress) buy it and use that as your inspiration. Take it to the paint store and they can match it.
