The Big Mac was first introduced in 1967 by Jim Delligatti, a McDonald's franchise owner in Uniontown, Pa.
McDonald's estimates 550 million Big Macs are sold each year in the U.S. alone. That's about 17 every second.
BIG MAC FACTS
-- 40 years old
-- Thought up in 1967 by Jim Delligatti.
-- Delligatti owned McDonald's store near Pittsburgh.
-- Sold for 45 cents in 1967.
-- Now sells for about $2.75
BIG MAC WORLDWIDE
-- Sold in more than 100 countries
-- Americans consume the most Big Macs: 550 million each year.
-- Japanese are a distant second: about 150 million each year.
GLOBAL FLAVOR
-- Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, sesame-seed bun.
-- Exception: India, called the Maharaja Mac and made with chicken.
BIG MAC NUTRITION
-- Standard Big Mac contains 540 calories.
-- 29 grams of fat, 10 grams of saturated fat.
-- 1,040 milligrams of sodium.
-- 45 grams of carbohydrates.
It's a wonder it's lived this long with all that saturated fat and sodium!
Oh Americans don't go by the nutritional information....they go by how it tastes...apparently a lot of folks think they are GOOD! 550 million - yikes! And since we are the most over weight country in the world (didn't I read that somewhere?) it stands to reason. That is unbelievable. If I have to go there (kids) I just get a plain hamburger...though I LOVE those fries!
