RainSoft "apollo" information?

Reply Tue 31 Jul, 2007 04:44 pm
We recently purchased a home which has a RainSoft "Apollo" water softener. I have tried searching for information on the net, and so far have only come up with complaints and discussion boards.

Do any of you have information on this water softener, such as maintenance & care?

It has beeped occasionally, and according to the label on the control box, the battery was dead, so I replaced that, but otherwise, I don't know what to do.

Thanks,

James C

Basically you replace the 9V battery and check to see that your settings are still programed in the computer.
The Q valve was the best valve RainSoft ever had. Unfortunately it is obsolete.

Thanks H2O man, but how do I check my settings, and what should they be? Anybody have a user's manual or anything?

Thanks again,

James C.

This information is normally written on a tag stuck to the valve.

S = estimated total pounds of salt in the brine tank ~ ENTER
P = current time of day A.M. / P.M. ~ ENTER
h = early A.M. time you want the regeneration to start ~ ENTER
H = total hardness of your H2O ~ ENTER
C = the capacity of your system ~ ENTER

Before you do anything press SALT ~ CHECK and note the reading
do this for CYCLE TIME, HARDNESS and CAPACITY.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick response, that should get me going.

So, is this a good unit? From your previous posts, I assume the valve is rebuildable? What problems am I likely to experience? Any particular known weaknesses?

Can I get parts / supplies? Resin?

Would you recommend a prefilter? Currently there is not one installed.

I guess those are my current questions, thanks again for the help

You can buy resin from any dealer, local or online. Online you'll pay much less for it than to buy from a national brand dealer. I can sell many brands and types of resins.

Service.... learn to do all of it that you can, yourself.

James, the resin in your Q should be just fine.
The Q can be refurbished if you can find the parts, but
it is obsolete and no longer supported by the factory.
When it dies you will need to consider a new control valve
or a new softener. You should not need a pre-filter, but
if you do I suggest a backwashing carbon filter for chlorine
reduction and filtration.

I hope that helps ~

James, if or when you get into replacing the control valve, look at a Clack WS-1 or a correctly sized softener using one.

If and when the time comes to invest in a new softener the EcoWater ERR 3500 is far superior to anything else on the market and it is designed for chlorinated city/county/municipal H2O.

This weekend, my son and I watched the cycle on our RainSoft Apollo.

The time we got for the various stages were:

Stage 1: 13 min
2: 120 min, ball in valve at top position
3: 14 min
4: 3 min, ball at top
5: 20 min, ball at bottom of valve
6: 15 min, ball at bottom
7: 20 min, ball at bottom
8: 1 min, ball at bottom
9: 3 min, ball at bottom

My questions: Does anybody know what is happening during these stages?

Also, I checked my settings, as advised by H2O man, and on the tag, I found salt=240, water hardness=15 (confirmed by strip test as well), and capacity=19 (previously, 23 was written there, but subsequently crossed out).

I set the correct current time, then set the cycle time. Will it cycle at this time every night? Or is it at that time, but when the system calculates the resin needs to be regenerated?

Thanks for the help. Does anyone have drawings of control valves? Even a different one (although similar would help) just so I can look and see how it works.

Thanks again,

James C.

It will cycle at that time once a week or when you exceed it's capacity. Whichever comes first.

Cycles:

1 - put soft water into brine tank
2 - sit 2 hours to dissolve salt
3 - backwash
4 - sit idle
5 - draw brine
6 - soak
7 - draw brine
8 - sit idle
9 - fast rinse
