Rainsoft water conditioner problem?

Reply Wed 18 Jul, 2007 02:18 pm
Hello: Yes I have a green (cover) rainsoft water conditioner approx. 20 years old. It is set at 32 capacity 25 for hardness. My water does not seem soft at all. The unit does regenerate and fill the brine tank up and emptys itself but water seems untreated. Any suggestions to possible problems ???? Thanks Tom

It sounds like you have an AQ32.
Reset the capacity at 28 and check to see that it is counting gallons used.
BTW, what kind of salt are you using?

It won't hurt anything to start the cycle.

Have you tested the hardness of your H2O lately?

Yes I had the water tested it was 17-18 grams per gal. hardness and 2.2 parts for iron. ( water from outside hose which is not treated by softener)

I did not have the soft water tested but If I taste it from outside faucet ( not treated from softner) to inside from faucet . It actually seems the same like their is no softeness or change in taste or odor? Could it be the resin? What is life expectancy of resin from rainsoft???

RainSoft sold two different resins back then. ION-X 100 and a 10 year resin.
I have seen the 10 year stuff go bad and I have seen the ION-X 100 become bound by iron.

Since your system is consuming salt I think you are on the right track.
The resin is shot or it's gone.

Your AQ is obsolete so it may be time to consider a brand new system.

Get some Iron Out or Super Iron Out at the grocery store or Lowe's, a hardware store etc.. Mix a 1/2 cup in a gallon or two of warm water and pour it into the bottom of the salt tank (thru the brine well where the brine pickup tube is if you have one), not down through the salt if possible. Then add 2-3 gallons of water to the salt tank. Wait two hours or more and do a manual regeneration. Then visit the sizing chart page on my web site and learn how to set up your softener. Doing the Iron Out thingy a second time asap after the first time is a very good idea.
