Is it possible to lift 1 tonne? I'm curious because I'd like to try and do it if it were physically possible.

The simple answer is no...not without some sort of mechanical or artificial non-human assistance. Common sense should dictate this. It is humanly impossible unless it's one of those miraculous freak heroic occurrences while attempting to save a life.

Are you asking if you can do this with help from a mechanical device?

"How much weight can a fit man safely lift?

It would, of course, vary considerably depending upon the situation, conditions, distance, duration and the size and strength of the man.

Clearly, it's unreasonable to expect average men to do what Olympic weight lifters can do. Hossein Reza Zadeh of Iran, for example, got the current Olympic record for the clean and jerk in the men's 231+ pound class by lifting 579.8 pounds. The woman's record is 402.3 pounds by Gonghong Tang of China."

Perhaps seeking out a more typical (and doable) training goal for someone in good physical shape is to lift a maximum of 1.25 times their weight. So, if you are 180 lbs (82 kg), then a lift of 225 lbs (103 kg) is achievable without extraordinary training measures.

Aren't you able to condition the human body to do miraculous things like the gurus of india or the shaolin monks? Isn't it true that we haven't discovered everything possible there is to know about the human body yet?

And when you mention that it is one of those miraculous freak heroic occurrences, wouldn't that mean the human body is capable of such things, just that we aren't aware of how to access the driving force behind it?

I guess it would take either a life saving scenerio or maybe a helping hand from God because evangelist Pat Robertson can be seen leg pressing 2200 pounds here http://www.cbn.com/communitypublic/shake.aspx

Or he's a liar.

One ton is about 1000 pounds, about the weight of 1/2 or less of a car. I thought that some individuals have been able to lift a car, when a kid or elderly person was stuck under the wheels.

If they can do it, why couldn't you ? Depends on the circumstances, doesn't it?

It could be mind over matter, as women have also been able to lift heavy objects in cases of emergency.

A long ton is a British measurement and equivilent to 2,240 pounds. Not to be confused with the US "short ton"

United States measurement also known as a short ton that equals 2,000 pounds

Tonnes, A unit of weight equal to 1,000 kilograms, or 2,204.6 pounds.

I have never tracked down that lady that lifted an automobile to save the little kid, or whatever it was supposed. Somehow, it always ends up coming from some guy's friend who knows someone, who would never lie about something like ths, who just happens to know. . . .

If anyone knows the actual source, I would just love to hear it.

The record-holder for women was mentioned earlier on the first page,. Chai has the info wrong. The women's record is 402 pounds -- NOT kg.

Chai, sorry...I quoted you wrong ..you didn't say women...you wrote about the lifting record; however, the woman's record is around 400 lbs, so it confused my little brain.

However, this is the record info I researched (pertaining to clean-and-jerk lifting):

"Clearly, it's unreasonable to expect average men to do what Olympic weight lifters can do. Hossein Reza Zadeh of Iran, for example, got the current Olympic record for the clean and jerk in the men's 231+ pound class by lifting 579.8 pounds.
