Nepalese police dogs, after being smeared with vermillion on their foreheads and marigold garlands placed around their necks on the occasion of the Tihar (Diwali) festival in Kathmandu, on November 13, 2012. On Tihar, it is customary in Nepal for people to offer blessings to dogs.

Edinburgh Zoo’s group of dwarf mongoose grew by three when they welcomed a trio of new arrivals recently.

Doting dwarf mongoose mum and dad, Elvina and Elmo, are being kept busy with their adventurous offspring. This is their first litter of kits since the pair arrived at the Zoo in January this year. The new-borns are keeping mum and dad on their toes with their adventurous antics; the trio have quickly taken to exploring the different tunnels around their enclosure.

These playful and curious characters are incredibly social animals that can live in groups of between two and 20. In the wild dwarf mongoose can be found inhabiting the dry grassland and bush lands of Africa. Small by name and small by size, these little creatures are usually around seven to eleven inches in length and are Africa's smallest carnivore, as well as the smallest of the mongoose species.

@firefly,
Barry, Gandolf makes me a little sad. But he's got a great owly face--and a nice roof over his head. I agree with you about jellyf ish. They are amazing. (Weary of the bumping.) Enjoying the vermillionized dogs. Love dem shepherds. Thanks for all the pics, London.

firefly, OMG, thudding and plotzing all over the upper east side. The baby mongooses are too much. Thanks muchisimo.

@Roberta,
Barry: love that homebody owl. Glad he's comfortable where he lives. Also love those wonderfully decked out police pooches. Their colors suit them.

Also plotzing (Wondering if I can legally use that word?) from the baby mongoose and duck family. Thanks firefly and Roberta. Great family portraits! Very Happy

@tsarstepan,
I looked up Gandalf the Great Grey Owl and found there are a bunch of them with that name in different Owl rescue facilities, interesting stories.

These are the most wonderful photos of Harvest Mice--and it took such unbelievable patience to get them.
I was absolutely unable to choose between the incredible photos because I found them all enchanting. So, forgive me for posting all of them that I found. If you don't feel the same way, just scroll by them quickly.

Photographers Jean-Louis Klein and Marie-Luce Hubert, both from the Alsace, France, spent the year snapping the elusive harvest mice in a project that ended with their release into the wild. Laying patiently in meadows and reed beds, the pair were able to capture the fascinating images. A stunning and rare insight into the secret tiny lives of adorable harvest mice is revealed in incredible pictures captured painstakingly over 12 months.

To demonstrate how the mice often take to the water in the wet meadows they inhabit, 55-year-old Jean-Louis and 46-year-old Marie-Luce gave one of their subjects a dip in a mouse-sized aquarium before releasing it into the wild.

The mouse one balancing makes me cry.
Which is of course not useful to the mouse.
