How is Mamet pronounced?

I have heard BBC radio & TV people say it m - (a as in hat or cat) - m - et (like set bet let met) that is the t is pronounced.

The name is French-Jewish in origin and I believe Mamets in France pronounce the t (it's not "Mamay".)
