Hello, I am switching out a GFI and switch in my upstairs bathroom and I have run into a wiring issue. I did not jot down how the old recepticles were hooked up before I removed them. ( Yea, I know) Anyway, there are 3 conduit pipe ends behind the old recepticles, one comes up from the breaker box, the 2nd goes up to a vanity light (which the switch controls) and the 3rd goes down and over into a adjoining bedroom which has half switched outlets. All 3 conduit pipes have a red, black and white wire coming thru them. Question is, how do I hook up the new GFI and switch so everything works as before? Thank you in advance.
@WMND,
The lines from the breaker need to go to the GFI and the line to the vanity lights need to go from the GFI. Use this as a guide with the vanity in place of the non-GFI outlet. For the bedroom receptacles, my guess is you do not want them to be on the GFI circuit. In that case, you can tie them to the inlet of the GFI (the line terminals) the same way you tied in the line from the breaker box. That will send power directly from the breaker to the bedroom.
@engineer,
Great, thanks. I'll give it a go when I get home and see if it works.
