Is "just came" acceptable in American English in the following sentence from a newspaper article?

She desperately wanted someone to help her make sense of things. At around 10.30 p.m., she got her wish. Her father _____________________ (just come) home from work, and he handed her his BlackBerry. "She wants to speak to you", he said.

The original has "had just come", see here:

"Had just come" is correct. "Just came" indicates a more immediate action.
