There is a constant battle inside us between our inborn reflex reactions (survival instincts) and our learned behavior conditioning, our so-called civilized rules to live by. Freud characterized them as the id and the ego -- all happening inside us with no knowledge or control, just certain feelings and memories of what worked and didn't work for our benefit.

Government and co-operation are in all things the laws of life. Anarchy and competition, the laws of death. John Ruskin (1819 - 1900)
