Basin plan draws criticism from all sides
Updated November 28, 2011 12:30:24 /ABC news online

Environmentalists are unhappy, irrigators are angry, but the people who put the Murray-Darling Basin plan together think they have it basically right.

The Murray-Darling Basin Authority's draft plan released overnight has slashed its estimates on how much water is needed to save the stressed river system. ...<cont>

@msolga,
Yeah the Rabbit one. Tone Rabbit, that is.

On the Murray-Darling, I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and predict that three consecutive flood years are going to sort out the chaff from the wheat, as far as primary producers and mining exploration companies go.

The water table will get a top-up, and the river will get the flush-out it so desperately needs. On my last trip through western NSW, the locals were saying that the tributaries were fishing better than they had in recent memory, and farmers do have pretty good memories.

Go Wayne! You're a star!
(Gosh it feels strange saying that! Razz Wink )

Whether an AAA rating actually means much to Oz battlers, & whether this rating is a good thing or not, who knows?

But .... I don't think that the Libs will be able to get away with claiming (yet again!) that they're automatically the best "economic managers" of the country at the next election .... & that's gotta be a good thing, right?

Another myth put to rest.

Amen.

Australia's AAA rating secured despite risks
Peter Martin
September 7, 2010/the AGE

WHATEVER the shape of the next government, Australia remains among the safest places in the world to invest.

The credit rating agency Standard & Poor's has reaffirmed Australia's top AAA rating, saying there is no point waiting for an election outcome because it will not make any difference.

However, the agency has warned of risks including a collapse in the housing market and a squeeze on one of the banks.

''During the election it was comforting to us that both leaders were trying to almost outdo each other in a race to return the budget to surplus,'' said S&P credit analyst Kyran Curry.

''There's been a lot of talk about rising levels of debt, but on a comparative basis Australia's debt remains low. In fact, Australia is a stand out, even among AAA-rated sovereigns.'' ...<cont>

@msolga,
The biggest myth at the moment, in the muddock press, is the (shock, horror) possibility that the budget might not be in the black next year?

Who cares? At less than 2 % of GDP, it is never going to be a problem, and Swanny needs to thumb the nose at the critics, and tell them to pull this one, it plays Jingle Bells. In the current global economic climate, and just having been voted the best treasurer in western economies, he might just take a chance and put the country in the red for five years, with the vision of creating some much-needed infrastructure, and desperately needed jobs for the unskilled as well as the skilled.

It would be the smart thing to do, in the current economic climate, as well as putting a small crew of investment knob-heads on the job of corporate take-overs to boost the country's international holdings.

If balancing the books is all we employing these people for, why not just hire an accounting firm?

Where is the vision??

QLD just passed Civil Union bill 47-40. That'll put the pressure on Upstairs.

@dlowan,
On behalf of Eorl: Us queenslanders one of the last ALP led states, has just voted for gay marriage. For labor members the the premier Anna Bligh allowed a conscience vote - four crossed the floor and sided with the LNP but the bill went through with margin bigger than expected.

Queensland has no upper house, btw.

Hooray for Queensland!
Well done!

(You have no upper house? That's interesting.
I sometimes see upper houses as more of a hindrance than a help.)

@msolga,
Quote:
The Queensland Parliament has joined Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT in passing legislation recognising same-sex civil partnerships.

....

Earlier, Deputy Premier Andrew Fraser, who put forward the private member's bill, said it was important to recognise the difference between civil unions and gay marriage.

....

The vote comes just days before Labor's national conference debates whether to go a step further and legalise gay marriage.

@msolga,
No comments this morning about our Federal MP's giving themselves massive payrises just before Christmas! Totally absurd compared to what us pensioners get. Proves again they have their snout in the trough only to help themselves.

@Dutchy,
As usual, Dutchy, I agree with Bob Brown.

But I'm wondering if all the information in this article is totally correct?: I find it difficult to believe that the PM of Australia would be more highly paid than the president of the US, or the PM of Britain.

Quote:
UPDATE 1.07pm: GREENS Leader Bob Brown has blasted a pay rise for federal politicians and says itÂ’s disgraceful the money will flow to pockets with no debate in parliament.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard's pay will soar by $90,000 to about $470,000 - more than either US President Barack Obama or British PM David Cameron are paid.

New Speaker Peter Slipper will pocket an extra $70,000, taking the Liberal turncoat's salary to at least $315,000 as part of a pay rise for federal MPs to be revealed before Christmas.

Pay of the most junior parliamentarians will jump from $140,000 to at least $180,000.

Senator Brown said the major parties had "removed the embarrassment'' of accepting the pay offer and "shed responsibility for a pay grab''.

It was double standard to debate the Budget, but not pay rises, which had budgetary implications, he said.

"It is our responsibility to justify to the electorate, to the taxpayers, the remuneration for MPs,'' he said.

Mr Brown said politicians' salaries should be compared with those of ordinary Australians, like police and nurses, not corporate executives who earned millions.

@msolga,
msolga the same salary figures for PM Gillard, President Obama and the PM of Britain were quoted in our Advertiser this morning, surely they wouldn't print such a headline if it were incorrect? It's the size of the increase which bugs me!
