I am politically primarily a libertarian, and if my opinion on any issue doesn't mesh with a strict interpretation of the Constitution, then I haven't thought it out very well.
That's not to say that we shouldn't, as a nation, do anything the Constitution does not empower the federal government to do, it just means we should amend the Constitution to allow the desired power, rather than ignore the Constitution when we find it too constraining for our tastes.
The problem with allowing the government to ignore the Constitution when it suits us is that we cede to them the power to ignore it when we don't like the outcome.
