Deb and Craven, you have my undying respect for your courage, honesty and integrity, for the same reasons that Edgar gave. Thank you.
As a little girl, I was irked that all the old ladies sat in the front pew and cried all during the service, which was given by a hell-fire and brimstone preacher. It irked me that the preacher told us that we were all sinners and that we were going to burn in hell. Those ladies didn't appear to be sinners at all; in fact, they were very nice.
It dawned on me when I grew up that those same ladies (most likely in their 20's and 30's, living in poverty) were able to experience a great carthsis during those weekly sermons. I also realized that a good library would have been so much better for them.
Deb and Craven also get major kudos from me as well. Perhaps the issues that have come up here do indeed warrant a thread of their own.
Now that Diane brought it up -- I am irked every time some religious Bible thumper talks about his/her loving, kind, forgiving god -- and then reminds me that if I don't mend my ways, their loving, kind, forgiving god was going to send me to Hell where I will be subjected to excruciating torture throughout all the rest of eternity.
Stupidity does tend to irk me.
In the immortal words of Curtis Mayfield: "If there's a hell below, we're ALL gonna go!"
People like this piss me off...

This is the very root of bigotry and hate, religious extremists.
Hoo ya, bongstar...sadly, the 'net is loaded with sites like that.
Thanks Diane and Cav. Itried to post on topic several responses ago, but it got buried. Now I have to think up a new "irk."
I think phoenix deserves an honorable mention as do a few other posters.
Frank, I admire your passion; I just don't see this your way.
I worked for a faith based organization. Every once in awhile they would have "retreats". One time one of the clergy induced me to go to one. Knowing that I was not of her faith, she reassured me that everything that would go on there would be very "ecumenical", as she put it. She made it sound like a day of reflection and meditation, and I bought the idea and went.
Well...............if this particular retreat was "ecumenical", I wonder what her concept is of a religious retreat. I just gritted my teeth, and held my tongue, the entire day.
I am irked (or bemused)when people place beliefs and feelings in more esteem than facts and observations.
I find that "facts" are few and far between.
Edgar, thanks for reminding me of Phoenix--her light shines bright on this forum.

Fair enough, Edgar.
I know you mentioned some health problems a while back.
Hope all is well.
Sorry things have been so cool between us lately.
Ain't nothin cool from here. We can be friends and not always agree.
Amen to that thought Edgar. So true.
Could our dear, atheist Edgar be the true spirit of Christmas?
