Help! I received a Toshiba laptop as a gift, but have no idea how to get a wireless connection for it. What hardware do I have to buy, and do I have to contact my usual ISP by phone (Earthlink, always a hellish experience by phone) or can I hook it up online? Any advice would be appreciated.

Do an online search for the model, check the spec (it should have a Wireless LAN 802.11bg built in), then download the manual and follow directions. Don't forget; you will need a Wireless Modem Router.

There's probably a switch on the front like mine has. Simply flick the switch and your modem should work prperly.

If you use EarthLink I'll assume you have a dial-up service and NOT cable modem or DSL.

If this is the case, you cannot (practically) get wireless for your personal dwelling. If you get cable modem or dsl service, it's is very easy.

However, if you are out and about with your laptop and are in a place that offers free WiFi, your computere will detect the signal (provided you have the card enabled, which should be by default) and will alert you in the lower right corer of the screen. You can then chose to connect to the network or not.

Thanks to all for your advice. About Earthlink, I definitely do have DSL and have for years, running my desktop.

I ended up returning the laptop, as I didn't like the Vista operating system it came with.
