I think it was made in the 40's about a guy that owned a huge store like Bloomingdales, and he was looking for a wife but didn't want any prospective bride to know how rich he was because they would marry him for the wrong reasons, so he pretended to be a shop floor salesman.
What was this movie called?

Right, that isn't exactly the plotline you describe and if you'd Google it, you might likely find he does try to pass himself off as an employee and, as I remember, decides that when a love interest arises, he can be sure the attraction is not for his money.
