Ok, first of all I'm not sure if this is the right forum or not but here we go. Smile

I have been thinking about this for a while and thought I would ask now that I'm here on A2K.
With the expensive colleges in the US, wouldn't it be cheaper to go to another country as an exchange student and get the education there?
I don't know the exact rules to be honest but here in Denmark educations are completely free.
If you're an exchange student, do you have to pay for the education you get in Europe or do you get a free education like the people who live in that country do?

Hope someone knows more than I do. Hehe Smile

If you are a non-EU citizen, you have to pay.

Oh I see. Thanks for the reply. Smile

How much does it cost for an American to get an education in EU then?

Typical tuition fee at a UK university is around 3000 UK pounds per year, around 4500 euros, 6000 US dollars. Accommodation is extra.

In some German states (a few, to be correct) university education still is free - but mostly you have to pay 600€ per semester (half year).

Edited: Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia have been charging a tuition fee of 500€ per semester for new students since the winter semester of 2006/07; from the summer semester this amount will be payable by all students.

Tuition fees will then also be introduced in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Hamburg. Other states will follow.

I don't know If I made it clear, but in Britain, university education is free to all UK and EU students. If you were from outside the EU, say from the US, Canada, China, Australia, or any other non-EU country, then you have to pay.

Sure?

"All students studying at UK Universities have to pay tuition fees. The fees you pay depend on whether you are classified as a 'Home & EU' or 'Overseas' student." - I payed the lower "Home & EU-fee at Open Univerity.

Sorry you are right, Walter. However, the fees are not payable at the time. The government pays the fees as a loan, and the student pays them back later when their income exceeds £15000 per year.

This is what confused me

"As a European Union student entering an undergraduate course you will not have to pay tuition fees, before or during your University course. You may defer payment of tuition fees by taking out a Student Fee Loan."
