Posession of an Offensive Weapon

Is a crime in Great Britain.

Think for a moment - just how stupid this "law" is. Anything can be deemed offensive, a rock, a pocket knife, a bat.

It us unbelievable to me that people are willing to put up with such a nanny state. And not care. Bloody twits!

Its not a nanny state. Its a place where certain public services are deemed a mark of a decent civil society. One such is the right to go about one's business without fear that every other person is carrying a offensive weapon. Another is an education service where we learn to spell the more difficult words such as possession.

any weapon carried for which you dont have a license.

or anything else which could be used as a weapon where there is intent to use it offensively.

Mechanic going home from work with a screw driver...no problem

same mechanic going to a club with a screw driver...could be in trouble

it depends

no you misunderstand. No one needs a license for a screwdriver. But if you are found in possession of a screwdriver in circumstances which give strong grounds to suspect you might use it as a weapon, then you could be charged with carrying an offensive weapon.

Quote:
Hear hear

Meaning

A shout of acclamation or agreement.

Origin

Originated in the British parliament in the 18th century as a contraction of 'hear him, hear him'. It is still often heard there although it is often used ironically these days.

It doesn't surprise me that so many of you would agree with such stupid statement on Steve's part. It isn't ignorant, it's stupid and on purpose.

Do any of you really think a law is going to keep anyone from carrying an "offensive weapon", such as the screwdriver in question?

Aust PM in birthday hug scare. 27/07/2006

Sydney - Australian Prime Minister John Howard's security detachment has been left red-faced after a teenager carrying a screwdriver strolled up to the leader and gave him a bear-hug.

The incident occurred on Wednesday as Howard enjoyed a morning stroll along the banks of Melbourne's Yarra River on his 67th birthday.

Schoolboy Stephen Battaglia, 16, was working on a rowboat when he and his friends spotted the prime minister.

Battaglia simply walked up to Howard, screwdriver in hand, catching the prime minister's security detachment flat footed.

"I didn't realise I had it in my hand. I went up and said, 'Happy 67th birthday Johnnie' and gave him a big hug," Battaglia told Sky News.

"He was having a great time. I hugged him - he had a big smile on his face, I had a smile on my face. I said, 'Happy birthday Johnnie, keep up the good work' and he was off."

While there was no suggestion Battaglia had any malicious intent, newspapers questioned why Howard's security had failed to stop him. Howard's office declined to comment.
