I've just now decided that the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" is the greatest rock and roll song ever.
The Beatles' are so lauded and so often played that, sometimes, we hear them on the radio and it sounds like background music.
But play "I Saw Her Standing There" in a room full of people and watch what happens.
They are very great. Who else put out albums in which virtually every song was a hit?
Led Zeppelin.
Not pop hits, but I'd bet that percentage-wise, they have at least as good a track record as the Beatles as far as songs being staples of rock radio.
But yeah, the Beatles are f---ing great, and that is a great song.
Beatles
Rubber Soul
Revolver
that's about it.

Yeah I was just listening to a live version of Dancin' Days. When Zeppelin really rocks though, it's more of a "drinking beer in a parking lot" vibe to me--in the same vein as Motorhead and MC5--whereas early Beatles (Chuck Berry ripoffs) makes the ladies throw their dresses over their frickin' heads.
Love both bands.

Rubber Soul: more contemplative and vulnerable, but before the drugs.
Interesting.
Picking a favorite Beatles album is a personality test.

Ditto on that. Any particular Zeppelin album you have in mind? II and IV are the obvious candidates, but at the moment I'm rediscovering III. Great stuff.
Zep rip off the White Stripes and the Beatles are just Oasis clones.
I remember thinking of Zeppelin as wannabee dummies.
Well, that was a while ago. I remember liking them when only dorks did.
I was around when the Beatles first hit the sand. Remember driving with friends to Palm Springs hearing I Saw Her Standing There on the car radio, not for the 100,000th time, but the first time. Context has a lot to do with import.
I Want to Hold Your Hand.
I was just a little kid but I can remember hearing that and thinking what a great song it was.
Led Zeppelin? Kashmir. Love that song. Makes me wanna smoke a whole nickle bag in one sitting. All by myself.

I have always said that Kashmir is the greatest song to listen to while high EVER. That long note that Plant screams/sings in the middle is enough to make your brain melt right out of your head.
best albums to hear while f*cked up....
Close To The Edge
Atom Heart Mother
Bitches Brew

Anything involving Robert Fripp and sparse funky bass (exposure, darshana et al)
Hey Jude is my favorite. But not my much. Followed closely by Penny Lane, All You Need is Love, Real Love, With a Little Help from My Friends...
And really I like a lot others but those are my favorites that I can think of.
Does anyone remember the group Osibisa?
Please dont scold me but when pop princess sensation Tiffany released I saw him standing there(a Beatles cover)I thought it was fantastic!!! and in many way surpassed her previous classic 'I think we're alone now'.
It was only years later that I found out it was a Beatles song.
I was onl about 12/13 at the time it was released.I didnt have the input of musical knowledge I have now.
Favorite albums to listen to while baked (in no particular order):
Blonde on Blonde--Dylan
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots--Flaming Lips
Maggot Brain--Funkadelic
Disco Volante--Mr. Bungle
Television--Television
Velvet Underground--the Andy Warhol album
Dark Side--Duh
This does not include hip-hop. That list would be way too long. But I will say that anything by MF Doom (or his many alter-egos) is pretty much mind blowing under the "right circumstances."
