Well, 'twas earthy but sweet. Mayhap different patchoulis smelt different? It smelt okish after it was long gone - like in leather and stuff - just a whiff...

Remember musk oil? I actually loved it, if it was not too sweet...

Yep. Fresh patchouli is hard to take. I think when it is old and mostly a memory, it's best.

Musk oil? That was good, but I loved *LOVED* sandalwood. Still do. Could there really be a forest somewhere that smells like that?

Thanks, wabbit.

It seems that it is technically a herb, grown on purpose and harvested several times a season, for its oil. East and West Indies, and Paraquay.

Used in cheap perfumes and soap.

Maybe the patchoulie that deb is thinking of is mixed with amber or mhyrr? They're both very sweet smelling and often applied by hippes. I use amber sometimes, I like the sweet smell and think that it's cool that it's a tree resin.

I'd prefer it if they just applied some deodorant on occasion. Confused

LOL. Like the French used perfume to cover BO, and ketchup was used to cover bad meat, this oil has been over-used to cover similarly bad bodily odors?

and incense ...

I love incense, burn it regularly, but it doesn't really cover too much. You can still tell that people are stinky Confused

I went to a sci-fi book reading a few years ago. I think I was the only person who used deodorant and the only woman who had combed her hair that week. Interesting crowd. Lotsa pocket protectors happening there.

I'll never deny my natural geekiness/dorkiness. That would be Mission Impossible. But I've always been a clean, unstinky dork.

I mean - I was at that sci-fi book-reading. There's evidence right there. The three guys I was with took me to Taco Hell for my birthday dinner afterward. We talked about teaching, computers, science, working in other languages. Geeks. We're geeks.

Have you bathed since your cross-country trek, patiodog?

Used to hide the smell of marijuana - heavy and dank. I have a feeling that it was a favorite of Sherlock Holmes!!!!

Why hide it? Man, some people are just plain paranoid. (Like patchouli's not evidence in and of itself. C'mon. Like the guy driving the Volkswagen bus with the "Leave No Turn Unstoned" bumper sticker asking the cop, "Why'd you pull me over.")

As to bathing -- I have not. But I have taken many showers.

I always thought incense was invented to reassure the stupid that their dope smoke was being hidden....

I quite like sandalwood, too.

Now sandlewood I like, just don't like the heavy oils that are in the air from incense burning. I end up hacking for days after

I loved the smell of some Nepalese rope incense I found once. Very aromatic and light.

I have chocolate and milk stuff here now - just unwrap it, and it leaves a soft, pleasant scent around.
