My mother feels the same way you do. She believes in all that crap about souls and spirits going to heaven or hell, but she thinks mediums are dabbling in the occult.

Rockpie, I think you need to think a bit more about what you believe. Why is it more plausible that what mediums hear are demons and not spirits?

Have you ever seen a medium work? I have. I went to a spiritualist church once and it wasn't anything special. The spirits were talking crap, one guy got told by his late wife to change the telephone supplier. Most of the spirits just sent their love. Why would a demon send it's love? And why the hell would a demon want you to to change your telephone supplier?

I seriously wish to know why you think that 'demons' are a better explanation.

Well, a careful reading of the bible would show there is no consciousness after death and that spirits do exist. So when you think you are talking to your great uncle, you are probably talking to one who knew him well.

So here's a person of faith trying to figure this out...

"Hmmm, let's see here, that crazy looking medium who makes money from spinning a good yarn and mumbling to herself, is either lying to me about what she's doing, OR she's really talking to demons. Which could it be? Hmmmmmmmmmm that's a tough one.

But I have faith that she's talking to demons because I want to believe in demons because what else am I going to blame my own weird-ass behavior on. Yeh, demons. Definitely demons."

I not only suspect that demons know a great deal about telephone service providers, i rather suspect that all of these services are owned by demons, and that their customer service call centers are staffed by demons.

Take the word 'telephone' out of your rant, Set, and apply it to anyone with a recurring bill for 'service', especially one of those 'convenient auto pay' features.
