Eighteen years ago I bought my home on an acreage in the country. Last week for the first time I happened to be home when the county assessors office's man came by to evaluate the property.
After discussing the house I asked about the value on the out buildings (what they call them) I was wondering if they were costing more than they were worth so we started talking about them and their values.
We discussed the summer kitchen, garage, the shed, the other shed and then it came to the barn? What barn I don't own the barn its on the other side of the fence on the farmers property!
Have I been taxed for the barn for the last eighteen years I asked? Yes he said as he was writing a note about taking the barn from my taxes and adding it to the farmers.
I asked if I get reimbursed by the county for the taxes and he said nope thats between me and the farmer. What the hell so I have to pay a lawyer to straighten this out now? I don't imagine I'll have a problem getting the money from the land owner but its still the point. What if I do and why should I have to go through the BS to get it either way?
Legally should I ask the county to handle fixing their screw up or work with the farmer? Personally I would like it better if the tax office had to.

Personally I think you should take responsibility for your own error. The state/county send you a bill for a sum of money which you duly accepted and paid. Did you bother to find out if the amount you were levied was correct.

Its your responsibility to ensure you being taxed correctly, not someone elses!

Tax notices here only say "out buildings" and what they deem their value not what the buildings are or even how many there are.
I have since talked to the land owner and informed him he is still being taxed for 2 buildings which were dismantled 15 years ago. At this time his wife is looking for the notice they sent to the auditors office informing them of what buildings were sold when I purchased the acreage and the notice sent informing them of the dismantlement of the other buildings.
Theres no doubt in my mind they sent the notices and do have copies of them. Lets just see what happens next I guess
