@ehBeth,

I made the shortening 1/2 c butter, 1/4 canola; cut the brown sugar to 3/4; the raisins were the golden type, soaked.

@ossobuco,
saved it - I think I just have to pick up a small container of molasses at the bulk barn the next time I'm there - the other ingredients are here - it looks like a good classic recipe

@ehBeth,
I tend to like a more molasses-y taste. Next time I think I'll put the b. sugar to 1/2 cup and the molasses to 1/2 or maybe 1/3. That may change the whole thing, we'll see. Meantime I'm out of molasses, so that goes on the shopping list. Pricy at my store; so are even bulk walnuts, but but but, they're important.

Set liked them - said he wasn't familiar with them - I said I knew them as an American cookie. Turns out they're probably from New England.

@ossobuco,
leftover cousin of chili

mushrooms and onions sauteed with ground pork
a can of Manwich sauce stirred in (where did that come from?)
a can of tangy baked beans

surprisingly good and it used up some stuff

(I forgot that the stores will be closed tomorrow Embarrassed as well as having been closed yesterday)

@ehBeth,
tangy baked beans? As in spicy? I come from boston baked beans family cooks, my generation being can buyers, and, uh, they're ok, once a year. I think I tried baking spicy ones once, but that was so long ago that I entirely forget the denouement except it wasn't good. I should play with that again, I should. I don't think I've ever bought canned chili beans, might like them but I do that myself via crock pot. Baking, though, I wonder re the difference other than the cost of gas to the oven. I've also never refried beans, time to learn (yes, yes, bacon grease probably a good idea).

Oh, I just ate a tamari almond.
