What's battenburg (other than lace)?

I had raw turnip for a snack, and I'm looking forward to the leftover chicken cacciatore over whole wheat pasta that I brought for lunch.

Mac11 it is BattenbErg, a light sponge cake which, when cut in cross section, displays a distinctive two-by-two check pattern alternately coloured pink and yellow.

A bowl of wheat bix and fruit.
