How effective IS IT to be part of a link sharing circle?

One of the things I have learned in creating my site is that it seems to be a general rule, and almost a requirement to have links that are on relevant sites that go to YOUR page.

Well, does that mean one link? two links?
Hundreds?

Does it make that much of a difference?

I have signed up for a few link sharing sites and got my email box filled with spam. Confused

Any suggestions for sites that I could use for photography that wont do this to me?

It's not a recommended practice by search engines and it's not usually effective.

Hmm.. now that I think about it you are absolutly right.

With the key words I WANT , and that MATCH what I do, I have already moved up the search engine placement from 19 to 7 just by working on my body text alone.

Not to mention, renaming my pictures, and checking the placement of my keywords...

and I only have but 2 inbound links from other sites.

Ehh.. Laughing

can it hinder me though?

I have a few people who would like to link share, and I have done some snooping on my competitors websites and they have links, and link sharing as well.. and they rank in the top 6 and higher..
