Is the Mac Really Safer Then a PC

Everyone claims the mac is safer but realisticly isn't it less safe because most people on a mac are not as cautious as pc users. Pc users are running software firewalls to see what connections are coming in and out, sandboxing type software and other security type programs.
If someone personally knows you are on a mac seems they could target you better since they know you proably won't be looking for anything out of the ordinary.

What do you guys think

It's a proven fact that Macs are far less likely to explode than generic PCs.

I've used MACs for over 15 years and haven't had anything remotely
like a virus yet. No hardware problems either. I'm sold!

MAC does have built in security software that is updated regularly,
so the user doesn't have to bother to constantly check email attachments and what not for possible security problems.

Macs are safer, hands down.

One of the principle reasons is there is little point in writing Mac viruses, since there are so few Macs out there compared to PCs.

The new Macs run Windows as well as the Mac OS, so its possible the new models are more vulnerable. If you insist on using Windows. But then again, if you insist on using Windows, why pay extra for a Mac?

Actually, it's been proven that macs are more likely to explode - literally. Who cares if you've got a virus when your macbook burns down your house ?

Now, seriously, I wouldn't say that they are "safer." They are still prone to viruses and worm. The reason you don't find any for a Mac is because Mac occupy 2% of the marketshare for home computers. It would be pointless to write a virus for a Mac since it would only affect a small number of users. The only thing makes a Mac more "safe" is that its population is so small.

Actually, that number has increased to 6 % and is climbing steadily Smile

Fact is: they are safer than a PC! It doesn't matter why, as long as they ARE!

Do you have any data to the exploding MACs?

The exploding laptop issue was related to almost 5 million Sony laptop batteries that ended up in Dell and Mac laptops.

Here is the recall info for the Macs:

But this is a non-issue that was over sensationalized and shouldn't influence buyer decisions.

That has been out for awhile. I guess you do exist since you are hardly here.
Why can't you show your face?

Well, I read a news that claims Apple releasing Megapatch to plugs 45 holes, should that means Mac OS does have security holes. From my point of view, Windows, Linux and Mac OS all have security holes, just that there were more Windows user to target, while Linux get fixed very fast by programmer all around the worlds, just a point of view. Correct me if I'm made mistake.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. If you are asking me why I ignore you it's because you seem to be following me around in threads I respond to trying to get my attention. You've asked me for my phone number in a Private Message that I ignored then went to a thread I was on asking why I don't respond to you.

I'm only responding now because ignoring doesn't seem to work, and I'm hoping future threads I participate in won't be cluttered with your off topic attempts to goad me into responding to your odd behavior.

If I see something you say that I'd like to respond to I will, but please stop following me around trying to get my attention.

All of them have security holes, this is true. And when the market share creates a big enough surface of attack the exploits come.

Linux is generally a target of attacks on webservers, where they are much more common than on the desktop. Windows is often a target on the desktop. And there aren't enough Mac users to be much of a target for anything.

With the new Vista the operating systems will be more or less as inherently secure (I'd give a small nod to *nix-based systems) but even with XP and SP2 the playing field is pretty level.

The difference is mainly in market share causing a more attractive target.
