and you thought I was just a pretty face.

Well, did you learn anything?

Can you now identify what type of scent you prefer?

ohhhhh......guess what I am!!

It's all very well but it gets on one.

On one's clothes and in one's hair and other women can smell it.

It's a territory marker.

Men should beware of it.

The technical stuff is snow. Compared to a bee's wing it isn't even in the technical side of life. It's another sales drive to cream your pockets boys.

I get turned on by just fresh and clean. Just the mere hint of something that's maybe citrusy, or maybe musky, but not strong enough so that you can tell for sure...

How will Opium help in my research?

By the way, I hated its scent when I had to use it last year for my project.

Absolutely. I learned about the 3 stages of smell...what were they...let me think. ...(checking back) ah yes; top, middle, base. Makes sense. I had no idea that there was a thing as a wheel of smell. Now that's interesting!

A recent research by Mark Kristal, University of Buffalo's psychologist, showed that smell is one of the most important external stimuli (not to mention the internal ones) that leads one to fancy another. I am also sort of into researching this, and as part of my project, I would like to know what kind of smell really appeals to men? Roses? Sharp smells? If you invited a woman over, what smell would you like her to wear?
I know men's choices vary greatly, but I am just trying to figure out a "general" favorite.

Thanks!

Is there a better odor than freshly baked bread or bagels?

I Think it was Paulette Goddard who said that frying bacon had the most friendly smell known to man.

Opium is the one of the most popular perfumes in the world. That should tell you something.

Mind you they did change it in 2000. Mumpad knew they had changed it when she tested some up in Hong Kong 2 years ago.

Opium however, is a very heavy scent, and doesn't appeal to everyone.

I have a theory, totally unproven that the sale of Opium is so high because (a) I believe a large percentage of perfume sales are to men, to be given as a gift to a female (b) It may not actually be the scent the man would pick as a favorite, but it's a name that everyone knows (c) The woman, pleased that the man has given her a gift, isn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

When Mr. Tea's daughter turned 13, we went shopping for a birthday gift. We had talked about it first, because, as many fathers, it had to be pointed out to him his little girl was growing up. I told him I still remembered a gift of jewelry I got when I turned 13 because it was "grown up" and I appreciated the giver realized I wasn't a baby.

So, we went shopping for perfume.

He made a beeline to the Opium, and if I hadn't been there, would have bought it. When I explained Opium was far to mature a scent for a 13 year old, he was at a lose because that was the only perfume name he really knew.
BTW, we ended up getting some androgenous scent by Calvin Klein. I personally didn't like it, but it was age appropriate, and little Miss Tea was thrilled to pieces.

Take Chanel....The old standby, Chanel #5 is beautiful, but perhaps too much for some (flowery). There's a step down, Coco (soft oriental)....which is what I wear......then, there is Coco Mademoiselle, with a more youthful spirit.

Then of course, there's the difference between perfume, cologne, eau de toilette....

spidergal, sorry if I'm stepping in here, but maybe understanding the chemistry behind it all may help. I'll shut up now.

The only scent that I've ever had perfect strangers ask me about was Calyx (by Prescriptives). I just checked it out to see about this top, middle and base note thing and found this:

Quote:
Calyx's ... top note includes ... grapefruit and mandarin with a tropical blend of passion fruit, mango, papaya and guava. The ... middle note is ... freesia, muguet, neroli, rose, lily, jasmine and marigold. The ... base note is ... oakmoss, orris, sandalwood and vetiver.

Quite a concoction, but I think it falls in the "green" part of the scent wheel.

Sorry, Chai ~ I just googled "calyx perfume" and something popped up. But there must be a site somewhere that does an analysis of all (or at least the major) brands, right?

I seem to remember a magazine article on this, comparative scent notes. And of course there's Robbins "Jitterbug Perfume" novel, for a real education on perfumery.

Shocked I am sorry, I thought you were referring to Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), the herb. I am too science-minded, you see.
