Also, I thought Ritchie Blackmore did his best work with Deep Purple, and yes, he played a Strat, and was classically trained. As for post-Purple work, need I say Rainbow? Yick...

Yes, child, Def Leppard were metal royalty back in the days of big hair and friendly women. I recall a fued amongst my friends over who was better, Whitesnake, Dokken, or Leppard. Ahhh...youth!

Is this the metal thread???
Great!
Hey cav, I saw a cut from the SARSrelief concert on www.rush.com , looked like a great party!! I'm one of the biggest rushfans that I know of, but they're not really metal...

Sooo, what am I going to do this year for my metal blood? Well there was the big www.bang-your-head.de festival in our little german town this summer, featuring Ronnie James DIO among others. Eeehh, I was the only one wearing a bright colored Hawaiian shirt, everyone else was clad in black, or some kind of fan shirt...

And, the next event is Iron Maiden in Stuttgart, have never seen them, so I'm kind of excited! My wife's coming too, but she's got mixed emotions 'bout it! Good thing we're going on vacation the morning after!!!

Aaaand, to top the year of, the legends of rock are coming on tour again! Motörhead!!! I hope I can get the evening off, but since it's before christmas, we'll prolly have good business in the restaurant, so I guess I'll miss them this time.

The billing for next year is up, but not yet full, they're still hunting for headliners, I guess! Bang Your Head

I was at the Bang Your Head Festival, also. And I was wearing a mint green t-shirt! But at least I have long hair... :-)

Yeah, I don't know yet what to think of Iron Maiden. We will see - and hear, I'm sure!

Hobitbob have you ever heard Pantera, Black Label Society, or Slayer?

If not, you have no idea what metal is.

Shocked ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!?!?!? Shocked

"Here I am, Rocked you like a hurricane"

and

"Fairies were boots"

Compared to:

"Can't you see I'm easily bothered by persistance"

And

"To see, To be, Cannot be done, In turn your making us. ******* HOSTILE!"

Now which is metal?

Why, the first of course. The rest is just noise. Wink
I recall an interview with Eddy Van Halen in Guitar World in the mid 1980s when he made the comment that the music one listened to in the period 13-17 would always be the "best." (he was referring to his love of Clapton). I haev come to realise he was correct. When you are in your mid thirties, you will listen to what those half your age listen to and say to yourself: "Why can't they at least tune the damn things," and "Don't they know more than two chords?" Wink

I am in total agreement with you about the last thing you said. It annoys me when bands don't have musical talent and they explode!

That is why I like Pantera, and Black Label Society. They come up an amazing riff, and an awesome rhythm backing.

When learning Pantera songs, I often have to get out the Chord Book, and look some up. They not only use the C5's, A5's etc. They bust out with F#maj7's and Bsus2/A13's. Not to mention the long and complex solo's they have. Their music is much like Clapton's in structure, but they play LOUDER, FASTER, and HARDER. Thus creating TRUE METAL!

And not to be persnickety, but the first issue of Guitar World came out in January of 1991 (don't hold me to that, because I could be wrong.).

Are you sure? There was a magazine of that name that ran from 1982 ( I have the first one: George Thorogood on the cover! Smile ) until about 89 or so, then seemed to dissapear. I thought it came back later than 1991. their website doesn't say. BTW, when did Guitar Player dissapear, because it was gone for a while too.
