Reporting Spam on A2K [resolved]

Reply Sat 7 Apr, 2007 05:21 am
Whenever I see a thread that is obviously spam, (1st post, link to commercial venture) I immediately report it to the mods. They always send me a receipt of my report, and its disposition, by E Mail.

Recently, another member, when he does this, replies "reported" on the thread. I thought that was a good idea, and started doing that myself. In that way, the mods (who have enough to deal with already), do not have to reply to multiple reports of the same thread.

I can understand a person not wanting his name connected to a report about some misdemeanor of another member. I certainly don't see a problem with putting your name on a spam report.

What do you think? Do you report spam?

Re: Reporting Spam on A2K
Yes, I do. Especially at those times when just a couple are online.

I got such, too. But for unknown reasons it stopped about half a year ago.
So, now I have to trust the software which tells me, my "report has been sent"

Unless I'm feeling very overloaded and put upon, I report spam.

Has anyone else noticed that there seems to be more porn and viagra spam in the springtime than in other times of the year?

I always report spam.
Usually make a comment on the thread so that everyone knows it has been reported.

I have blocked the A2K report reciepts because I know they get them, and it is just an automatic responce program anyway so no need to read it when it arrives.

And yes, there does seem to be A LOT more now then there ever was.
Maybe that is all the spam that Timber used to get.
A big hole in the a2k team..

I report the spam if I come across it. If I don't know if it is or not I still report and make a comment concerning what made me think it is spam.

I saw what you are talking about. I thought that was a good way to let people know. However I read that Jespah said the more reports they receive the faster they will check it out. Webpage Title

I provided the link to read about it. It is on the 2nd page post last 3 ending in 722. However, I recommend reading from page 1 because I thought it was information and amusing the way Jespah explains things.

Heh, thanks.

Two requests. BIG requests from everyone who works on the Help Desk and/or pulls spam.
1) Report it, but only once from your account (e. g. you don't need to send five copies of the same reported post). If we get more reports, we will know to look there first. It does not matter if someone else has already reported the spam. We want the reports. This helps us to triage the tickets. AND
2) Please do NOT reply to the spam, even to say you have reported it, even to poke at the spammers. One of the many places we look for spam is in unanswered topics. When spam is answered, it does not help us; it just makes it take that much longer for us to find stuff.

Thank you all very much. We saw a slew of reports this morning and it's truly helpful. Seeing 30 new tickets this morning, many of them from the same reporter, told me that I'd better be looking for spam ASAP.

So again, I thank all of you, on behalf of the hamsters. Smile

'Sokay, we know everyone means well and I know you all don't want to inundate us but the inundating is actually kinda helpful. Hey -- hamster #3 -- there are 6 tickets on post #5! What's going on over there? You get the idea.

I report lots of spam. I saw others adding "reported," so I started doing that. I'll stop.

When I make more than one report, I usually get one response saying something like, "Got 'em all." Once in a while I get a separate response for each report. I'm kinda hoping that doesn't happen again.

I reserve the right, once in a great while, to make a nasty crack to a spammer. Ever so often, I see something so egregious that I cannot control myself. Laughing

Phoenix32890 I thought your post was VERY helpful. I am glad you even brought it up. I was wondering not only about what you asked but I know I've seen others post reported and I thought maybe we were suppose to do that. So it is good to know exactly what helps those hamsters out.

I get that too. I prefer a separate one for each report. That way I know they got the ones I did report. But, I will take what I can get (whatever is
easiest for them).

shewolfnm I've seen your posts to the spammers and they crack me up.
If you don't get to poke fun at them I will miss that. Sad

Phoenix32890 I will look forward to you reserving the right to do it Smile

shewolfnm you wouldn't give up that easy would you? (silently wondering
if you will keep doing it once in a while, okay hoping you will)
I am shutting up now at least about this before I stick my foot in it again.
Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad <that is a plea for leniency hoping I will be released on probation or something. Okay I will shut up now. (emoticon with duct tape over mouth Smile )

Regardless of how much fun it seems to be, please do not poke at the spammers. Frankly, it can shade over into TOS violations. I am not posting on this topic to call anyone out but really, it's got to stop. I cannot make this any clearer. Thank you.

And -- it's not an auto response. We actually type up the Help Desk responses with our own little paws. Usually, tickets are merged so that the Mod responding only has to answer once instead of six times or whatever. That is easiest for us.

And -- please don't bin the responses. I'm not saying you have to pour over them but the Help Desk is how we communicate with our users. If we have to communicate with you (e. g. this is how we told a bunch of people that they had to change their userids, and it's how we told someone he had to change his email because we were about to suspend that email domain) and you're binning the mail from the Help Desk, we don't have a good way of reaching you. Communications are not going to happen via PMs, not from the Mods, because if you're binning the Help Desk responses then you're also binning the PM notifications. Plus, PMs mean that I am the only one doing the communicating. The Help Desk means that the burden can be shared. Finally, if you've ever wondered why I don't want PMs about moderation, it's not just for this reason. It's because, with very few exceptions, every time I get a PM, someone wants something. I know a lot of people love PMs, but personally they're just a lot of work for me.

Thanks for listening.

Hi Jes, What does this mean? And I hope I haven't done it. If I have, I'll stop.
