Eleven leatherback turtles are swimming across the Pacific Ocean to the Galapagos islands in a "race" that will be tracked online to highlight the plight of the endagered creatures.
They have been tagged with satelilite communication devices that give their positions as they head from nesting sites on Costa Rica's Playa Grande beach to feeding grounds near the Galapagos, 950 miles away.
They can be tracked at
www.greatturtlerace.com.
- 950 miles -
95% of leatherback turtles in the Pacific have vanished in the past 20 years due to human activity.
Thanks for the info, Walter. I clicked on the link, but the site isn't up and running yet.
I'll check back again in a few days.
Thanks, again, Walter. This should be fun--and interesting.

It starts on April 16.
Hiya Walter, I clicked on the site today. A sign is up--under construction. Do the turtles know about the delay?
They should: the sign is in several languages
Hiya Walter, I went to the main page. The race has begun. You can't see dots moving in the water, but it does provide an update of who is where.
I've been slow in getting organized, but I've decided I'm backing Genevieve, a female who is used to ignoring difficult conditions.
Right now, halfway through the race, she places fifth, but I expect great things of Genevieve.
I'm helping Billie (2nd right now [Genevieve 7th]ยด) with some navigational support.
Walter--
When the sharks descend Billie may have trouble. Genevieve has experience with sharks.
Billie is hanging in. I gotta root for Billie. That's the name of my very first pet.
My girl Genevieve is holding steady in fifth place--and biding her time.
The site announced an upset winner, but didn't say who it was. I think it was Billie. Does anyone know?
Billie first, Sephanie second, Turtleocity third.
Genieve 7th, btw.
Good for Billie.
Genevieve assures me that the race was fair. She was distracted by family concerns.
