April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

great job by schill last night -- 7 innings, 5 hits, 1 run.
he kept it close until the orioles bullpen squandered things...

some controversy in the globe surrounding the bloody sock.
orioles play-by-play announcer claims it was a hoax, that mirabelli told him the sock was painted red! WTF?
mirabelli denies everything...

Here is the response from Mirabelli and Francona....

Mirabelli was shocked, then angry, when relayed Thorne's comments.

"What? Are you kidding me? He's [expletive] lying. A straight lie," Mirabelli said. "I never said that. I know it was blood. Everybody knows it was blood."

Sox manager Terry Francona, when first told of Thorne's remarks, thought that perhaps Mirabelli had been having some fun with Thorne, that it was all a joke. But after Mirabelli angrily denied ever discussing the subject with Thorne -- "I honestly don't know who Gary Thorne is, that's a straight lie" -- Francona became agitated.

"What we're going through today as a nation, you hate to use a word like heroic on the field, but what Schill did that night on the sports field was one of the most incredible feats I ever witnessed," Francona said. "[Thorne's remarks] go so far past disappointing. Disrespectful to Schill, to his vocation. I'm stunned.

"I am just floored. Schill takes his share of shots, and this one is so far below the belt that I'm embarrassed and I wish somebody would have had the good conscience to ask me. I saw the leg. If that had been painted, I wouldn't have had my knuckles so white, and having so much anxiety."

And Schilling and the doctor ....

"It gets stupider," Schilling said with a tone of resignation in his voice. "I got the 9-inch scar for you. You can see it.

It has always been dismissed by the Sox and most notably Dr. Bill Morgan, who performed the innovative procedure on Schilling's ankle that allowed him to pitch, even as blood seeped through the sutures in his ankle.

The sock is now in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y .

So I guess, take a look for yourself and determine.

You can also check the sock to see if the stain has turned brownish from oxidation over time. Red paint does not turn brown with time.

whether its true or not, francona sent mirabelli a not-so-subtle hint and told him to let his bat do the talking for him from now on...

speaking of francona, he's been struggling to quit his chewing tobacco habit (globe article)

I thought Francona didn't believe that Mirabelli said anything - simply he was making a joke when he made that comment.

In any case, I doubt that it is paint - it would be too obvious and easy to detect if brought into question. Also Schilling doesn't seem the type to do something fake like that.

yeah, it came across that way.
but francona is a very smart manager, despite the affable facade.

i find it hard to believe that gary thorne would make up something like that, so its possible mirabelli did say it, but he was pulling the guy's leg...

gonna go check out schilling's blog.
maybe he's shed some light on Sockgate...

Yea, I'm sure Schilling took the time & energy to create a fake, realistic looking bloodstain:

first place, best record in the bigs, yanks tied for last... doesn't get much better than that!

"cy" beckett, the first one to 5-0, went 8 innings, gave up 2 runs on 8 hits.
his ERA for the year is 2.48.

paps is 7-for-7 in save opportunities.

wily mo's slam was estimated at 430 feet -- into a stiff wind.
he doesn't just hit the baseball, he assaults it...

Dice is slated tonight against the yanks in NY, but its not looking good, weather-wise...

schilling had something to say about Sockgate:
Quote:
Ignorance has its privileges

Take Gary Thorne, John, Jack Joe or whatever his first name is, Heyman, Karen Vescey, Woody Paige, CHB, Jay Marriotti, Bill Plaschke, and a host of other people that litter the media landscape, and put them all on an island somewhere.

Does anyone stop reading their newspapers? Watching the shows they appear on? The answer to that is no. Instead of using the forums they participate in to do something truly different, change lives, inspire people, you have an entire subset of media whose sole purpose in life is to actually be the news, instead of report it. They have little to no talent at what they do and other than a mastery of the English language their skill sets are non-existent

Beckett is only the third Red Sox pitcher to win 5 games in April. The other two guys are Pedro Martinez and Babe Ruth.

I'm impressed by Dice-K's ability to shake off a bad inning and come back
with a 1-2-3 next inning.
