lester grounded the angels last night -- 7 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 7 K's.
he looked every bit the ace, settling down after a shaky first...

J-Bay made like manny last night, parking one in the cheaps.
2-fer-4... not bad for his 1st career playoff game...

http://cache.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Globe_Photo/2008/10/02/38catchobyDAVIS__1222923326_7280.jpg

ellsbury looks like his extended batting slump is a thing of the past.
3-fer-5, 2 SB's, and another 'routine' spectacular diving snare in center...

http://cache.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Globe_Photo/2008/10/02/48soxwinDAVIS__1222925608_0537.jpg

pap shut the door in the 9th striking out the side...

once again, the angels did not resemble the team we saw during the season.
bad body language, bad base-running.
almost like they're psyched out...

yesssssah!

on a night when dice-K wasn't at his best (5 innings, 108 pitches, 8 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, 5 K's), the team picked him up.
now the angels get to face mr. beckett @ fenway, down 0-2, after flying across the country...

@Stormwatch,
that was a very un-beckett-like performance last night.
bad omen when the lead-off guy smacks a double on the first pitch of the game.
still, we made them work over-time for the right to play another.

tonight lester raps things up.
both bullpens are depleted, so look for cameos from would-be starts like byrd & wake...

@Region Philbis,
Well - coming off of a month of rehab probably took it's toll on Beckett. I know they are under pressure now though.

@Region Philbis,
Another late night...my students are gonna start wondering why I'm dozing off in the classroom Laughing Laughing

I've got the right tee shirt on, the right candles burning and we are all in the right seats...not that I'm superstitious or anything!

lester -- what more can you say?
this season he's morphed into a big-game pitcher.
in the biggest game of the year he threw 7 shut-out shut-down innings, allowed 4 measly hits, walked 2 K'd 4.
prolly coulda pitched to a few batters in the eighth.
the weary pen gacked up the lead, setting the stage for walk-off heroics...

jed gets the clutch single...

http://cache.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Globe_Photo/2008/10/06/37baybyGROSS__1223350941_3696.jpg
that brings home J-Bay with the winning run.

next game: friday night.
looking forward to getting some decent sleep after 2 late-late nights in a row...

last night the diceman cameth, he pitchethed brilliantly, and he shutteth outteth the rays !

http://cache.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Globe_Photo/2008/10/10/35dicewalkDAVIS__1223695693_9488.jpg

despite agonizingly walking the bases loaded in the first, he sailed through the first 6 innings without allowing a hit.
he threw a season high 7 innings, allowed 4 hits, 4 walks (low for him!), and struck out 9, tying a season-high.
opposing batters are now 0-fer-15 against him this year with the bases full.
oki & pap took care of their respective innings.

when he got into a 1st & 3rd no-out jam in the 7th, he slowed the game down to a crawl, effectively icing the tampa bay hitters.

the offense did just enough to make the performance stick.
scary moment -- drew took a high-90's balfour fastball off the shoulder.
wouldn't be surprised if tito sits him tonight against the lefty kazmir.

beckett takes the bump for us tonight.
if he can regain his playoff form, we will be a tough, tough team to beat the rest of the way...
