wild, wild night at the fens.
beanballin', brawlin' on the field, brawlin' in the dugout, injuries.

shields plunked coco, payback for a previous hard slide into 2nd, which was in response to a questionable tag at 2nd.

Crisp dropped his bat, charged the mound, ducked a wild right by Shields before throwing a few punches that may have grazed Shields before being tackled to the ground by catcher Dioner Navarro.

Rays DH Jonny Gomes charged the mound from the dugout, jumped on Navarro and Crisp, and threw a few punches that hit Crisp while he was on the ground.

The teams have a history of on-field confrontations.

later, jacoby rolled his wrist on a diving catch in center.
it looked to similar to jd drew's, and he didn't miss too many games.

manny, who blasted #503 over everything in the first, tweaked a hammy while batting in the 7th and left the game.
2 innings earlier, he and youk got into a shoving match in the dugout.
a tv camera recorded the event.
Shocked
i'm guessing youk said something to him about his lack of hustle running the bases, and manny being manny, gave him a backhand shiver.
these little flare-ups usually happen behind the scenes, out of view...

so lost in all the hoop-lar was a nifty 3-game sweep of the rays, a dominant outing from lester (6.1 innings, 8 hits, 1 run, no walks, 5 K's), and rookie chris carter's 1st (and 2nd) major league hit.

the lead: 1.5 games.
the home win streak: lucky 13...

I blame the 13 for that weirdness.

Manny, I can kinda understand. He's just naturally weird. And some guys are intense. But Coco? Coco?!?!?! The guy is named after a freakin' breakfast cereal. He's the last person I'd think of for punch-throwing.

Yeah, that was nice move to dodge that punch.
Just enough to let it by, but not so much as to be too far to counter.

now that the C's have wrapped up their remarkable season, it's time to get back to the business at hand... namely, red sawx baseball!

youk single-handedly sent everyone home happy today, ending a 13-inning marathon with a walk-off 2-run dinger (his 2nd of the game).
the top of the 13th ended with varitek somehow holding onto the ball after being bowled over in a home-plate collision.
lester pitched great, but got zero run support.
pap blew a save... but oki, hansen & lopez did a great job keeping the cards scoreless in extras.

Nice move on Tek's part.
He got low and compact, made the tag, and just rolled with the impact.

What was up with that ball that got by Crisp?

nifty combined 3-hitter last night.

at the half-way mark we're 49-32, which is 2 games ahead of last year.
not too shabby considering all the injuries...

I was at the game.

Damon was lucky that the fence gives so much as he hit about as hard as one could and both his feet off the ground.

I didn't see the replays with the balancing ball until later.
(What's the rule? Suppose it didn't fall off? Suppose he got up off his butt and reached up and picked the ball up from the top of the fence. Is the batter out? -the ball never touched the ground.-

Is the top of the fence the same as the ground? If he caught the ball as it fell off the fence, would that be an out? I think Yes. )

We had a very good time during the rain delay. Our seats are just to the left of home plate but back far enough to be out of any droplets. They showed a video about the new stadium--- thinks Mall of America with a diamond in the middle.

I was wondering that as well. Seems to me the top of the fence should be a
home run. Weird.
