xp home disk defrag stops on 50%, it freezes, help!

The computer I am using has a partitioned hard drive. NTFS and FAT32 are partitions with NTFS at 33.8 and FAT 32 at 3.43. The FAT will defrag, but the NTFS stops at 50%, and then freezes. I have to shut down by holding the power button (6 sec. delay) It's probably something simple, but I'm clueless at this point. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for any reviews or answers.

You could try giving the disk a checkover by running chkdisk [drive letter/r from the Run box on the start menu. This would repair any bad sections on the partition.

found the answer in the archives, but thanks again for help
I searched the archives, and found the answer. I needed to disable all running programs in the systray. It was also suggested that safe mode is best disk defrag. I appreciate the review and the info.

Take care!!
