It would help if you provided the source at which you found these alleged contradictions, so that members could make a judgment about the reliability of the site.

That being said, the references are sufficiently exact for anyone to look at the passages and decide for themselves if they consider that the contradictions do in fact exist. This was a topic of discussion in another thread, so i will like this thread in that one, so that people can come take a look.

Yep lots of contradictions there...and also lots of stuff in there that is not contradictory in the least, eg :

The last bit, heaven is supposed to be remade after some period of time (can't remember what -1000 years I think) here on earth.

There's enough contradictions in the bible without having to lose credibility by fluffing it out.

As another note : the Gospels were supposedly written a few decades after the death of Christ...and most peoples memories aren't good for even yesterday.

I didn't get them from a website, I was provided with them by a follower of the Jewish faith. I myself haven't had time to check all of the contradictions out, I just thought I'd put it out there, because it's a good discussion topic, and I find it interesting.

Are you kidding? Rolling Eyes This is ridiculous. Some simple study of the actual passages and the context reveal that NONE of these are contradictions in any way! For many of them, you don't need to do any more than just read the allegeded contradiction. Just 1 example:

The angel told Joseph. Mt.1:20.
The angel told Mary. Lk.1:28.

Umm... is the angel not allowed to tell both? does it say only Joseph or Mary were told? You are smart people. I don't have to hold you hand through all these!

Fair enough. This place is crawling with bible thumpers, and many of them might show up to dispute the claims you've made. It will help your case if you can quote the verses offered to demonstrate the contradictions, and be prepared to defend your claim.

As you can see, you already have a critic, although rather than tackle them verse by verse, the member "Run 4 Fun" simply denies that any of them represent contradictions, and only comments on one set. Not a very sterling performance, but the religious here (as is so elsewhere) are fond for making statements from authority, which they apparently expect to be accepted without question, much as they imbibe their "faith."

It is plain that Matthew, Chapter 1, and Luke, Chapter 3, disagree about the genealogy of the putative Jesus, and that this constitutes a contradiction.

I don't know if you are going to want to do this, but it might help if you, or someone, examines each pair of allegedly contradictory passages.

I highly doubt anyone read that entire post. I don't even think you came up with it yourself.

I can tell you a couple things right off the bat:

1. John was six months older than Jesus. John was over two years old so he lived. Rolling Eyes

2. You really need to read the Bible before you start pointing stuff like this out and expect us "bible thumpers" Laughing to take it seriously.

The 144,000 in the book of Revelation are not the only ones that will be saved. They are (according to many theologians) the 144,000 elect that will spread the gospel during the Great Tribulation.

Setanta, I didn't think that I would have to take a lot of time explaining these for you people who already have your own working brains! I made no appeal to authority, just to your own intelligence. The genealogy in Matthew is traced through the legal father, Joseph. The genealogy in Luke is traced through the mother, Mary, but says Joseph at the end in keeping with the listing of men. Also, it is good to mention that son in the Bible also can mean grandson, or a more distant decsendant. The same is true for "begat", so the genealogies are not generation to generation one at a time. Different parents, different lineage, no contradiction.

Herod issued his command as much as 2 years after the birth. Does Matthew say that they immediately fled. No. And John wasn't in Bethlehem (even if he was young enough)! The Jewish follower that gave these to me, also pointed out that Jews did not trace heritage by women, only men. I'm sorry if these are all wrong, like I said, I put them up to see what others would think of them, and the response seems rather obvious to me. I don't have the time to check them all out for myself, so thanks for pointing out any of these contradictions that you see as absolutely wrong.

Yes you've got it just right.

This is a very common method to diss the Bible without having to do much thinking (or any).

Citations of 'omissions' from the Bible, or 'the Bible doesn't say..........' are often given as proof that the Bible can't be trusted etc

Much of the cut paste list at the beginning of this thread is this type of junk.

Of course, cut and paste is what must be done, because most critics of the Bible have never actually read it. They may have read portions of it, or heard them read.

But the Bible is a long and complex document, and even a one time cursory read thru will not give the reader sufficient background to absorb, interpret, understand it.

Those who think they understand the Bible, or even think they know it's contents well after a cursory read thru or two are really kidding no one but themselves.

If one wants to offer criticism of the Bible, I have no problem with that, but the lazy cut and paste jobs bore me.

I would like to see some original thought go into a post regarding a single specific alleged contradiction. (Throwing dozens of supposed examples into a post does little to promote detailed examination or discussion. Inevitably, as you answer the first one or two, you will accused of 'cherry picking ' the list and ignoring the rest. The alternative, submitting a post pages long on dozens of topics , is a bad one because most people will not read or follow along with an excessively long post. And most of us have a life outside of A2K.) But a focused discussion on one topic at a time would be interesting.

And putting some thought into it, to show that one actually understands what is being discussed would be even better, but I won't hold my breath waiting for that from most of the Bible critics on A2K.

skeptical why not go through the list you posted and pick one or two alleged contradictions. Then read what the verses actually state and if you still feel they are contradictions, come back and post them. And then we can have a discussion on them...
