Peculiar printer behavior

This is a tricky problem to try and explain without actually showing one of the pictures in question, but I'll try to be clear.

Vital statistics first: I have an HP Pavilion 9800 computer with XP Home version, HP Pavilion v70 monitor, and a Canon S600 printer. I wanted to print some photos I took with my Nikon Coolpix 775, and had no difficulty getting them into my Picasa program.

However, when I went to print a copy of one, the photo of a person, the print came out with horizontal stripes 1/4 inch high alternating light and dark colors, the entire height of the 8 1/2x11 sheet. This happened once before, quite recently, and only seems to happen when printing from a photo. Printing a web page in color doesn't seem to have this problem.

When I print a color picture there is always a regular, herky-jerky action in the printer, a sort of push/wait/push/wait sequence, with a rhythm that sounds as though it would account for these horizontal stripes, but the stripes have never appeared previously.

These photos are important to me, and I would like to be able to print them out correctly.

Does anyone recognize this problem? Confused Confused

Tom, which software program are you using to print the photos? Picture-It, Jasc Paintshop Pro, Adobe Photoshop, etc?

The first thing you should do is see what driver you are using. Open the Control Panel and look at your printer's setting and see which driver is being used. If you see "Windows XP Device Driver" then you want to either use the CD that came with the printer or go to Canon's WWW page and download the correct drivers (The "Windows XP/2000" drivers) for the printer.

The Windows XP Device Driver provides only minimal capabilities on your printer. To use all of your printer's features you need the Canon driver.

Paper set right?
Tom: Double check what you have the paper type set for on your printer. I know with my Epson, if I am printing photos and forget to change the paper from normal to photo-grade (or whatever your system calls it), I get exactly what you are describing !!

Well, it doesn't seem to be the paper, and downloading the XP driver didn't help, either. That leaves me with one response to reply to - Butrflynet's question. Tha answer is that Adobe Photoshop Elements came with the Nikon 775, but I wasn't using it, as far as I know. I uploaded the photos to Picasa and printed from there. Would Photoshop have been involved in some way?

Well, it seems that the problem lies with the Picasa software Sad Which is too bad, because it's a very easy to use program. But I tried printing a picture via Photoshop Elements, and it came out perfectly. So I suspect I can write Picasa off.

Thanks to all who had suggestions. Smile

TK, My first thought was a printer problem, because I had the same problem with my Epson printer. I now use my HP 970Cse, and I don't have that problem. c.i.

Well, I guess I got carried away. Sad Anyway, the last photo I tried to print, using a shot transferred from my camera to my computer via Picasa, the same mess occurred, even though I was using Photoshop. I wonder if it's only a problem with pix put directly into Picasa, i.e. if the picture was transferred from the camera using some other software would this happen? I'll try to find out, but the whole thing is costing me a mint in ink! Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

It's difficult to separate between software or printer problems unless you can re-download your software driver and/or change the toners. c.i.

cicerone - by "toners" do you mean the ink cartridges?

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the printer, and am trying to get Canon to download the latest driver (although I'm pretty sure I have the latest now).
