Sometimes I need to escape from daily routine and have some time just for myself.
Last week, on Thursday, I made a trip to Utrecht and Amersfoort, the largest towns in the smallest Dutch province, Utrecht.
I've passed Utrecht many times and usually only stopped there for a coffee on the way to Amsterdam (and North Holland).
I always wanted to have a closer look at this place.
I've been in Amerfoort as a very young boy two or three times - I only vaguely remember the home of my grandaunt and -uncle, who lived there.
So, I'll post a couple of pics here.
I'm rather sure, the persons more knowledgable about Utrecht (nimh) and Amersfoort (Dutchy) can add comments better than anyone else.
Hey, I'm sure anyone will be able to tell you your photos are great!
But - bookmarking. If I recognize anything I'll holler
The view, in the early morning, towards the cathedral
Did someone ever connect bicycles and canals with 'Holland'?
great buildings, great cobbled street, great morning light....
Thanks, osso - time for a coffee
A first view of the cathedral - more to follow later - and afterwards some from the quarter around the cathedral
I love the mix of the buildings. There was a recent article I did NOT save - I'm trying to cut down my save article addiction - about the finessing of a relatively modern building tucked in with buildings of different ages. Think that was a SF chronicle piece by J. King, oh, well. Anyway, this streetscape is near musical in the play of buildings next to each other.
As a concept going from one country to another "just for a visit" is completly alien to me. To go to another country for me means months of planning visa passport 5 hour plane rides etc etc.
On the other hand why would I ever need to go anywhere else?
Just love the photos, the buildings are just so completely different.
More photos will come later.
I probably was born to be a travel agent and didn't catch on until decades later. But - being one might have ruined real travel for me. Even as it is, I'm skittish of "tourists" and the surface-only way of exploring. Walter, of course, doesn't fit that surface-only mode.
I miss Europe! Great photos, Walter!
Two more photos from "the same corner"
A view towards the other side
I am so insanely jealous I wont be able to read this thread anymore.
So just look at the pics, dd, and don't read my prosa
A few yards furthe on, the view at a croosroad to the right ...
... and to the left ...
... brought us to the last pic as of today
