Hi Everyone:
I'd like some help on finding the title to a film which runs along the following lines (I watched it almost 17 years ago so my memory is really sketchy):
A widower is raising two sons by himself - he's a rich successful man who doesn't have time to devote himself to his kids. His older son is curious about who his mother was when she was alive and spends his time when he is by himself trying to find out about her. His younger brother idolises him.
The older son finds some audio tapes his dad his hidden which he listens to secretly and (my memory fails me here) I think the tapes slowly reveal an argument his father and mother had which somehow was secretly taped. I think it is through these he discovers a secret (or something) about his parents.
His younger brother discovers what the elder son has been doing and being a young kid, tries to help only to be a nuisance. I distinctly remember one very sad scene when the two sons and the father are having an argument, and the younger son says "I want my mummy" to which the father immediately glares at his elder son and asks, "What have you been telling him?" and his elder son protests, "Nothing father, nothing!" His father eventually kicks his elder son out the house for a night.
My mind becomes a blank, and I can only remember the last chapter of the movie when the younger brother comes home (from the hospital or something) and sees the elder son sitting on a tree branch. The younger son climbs on the branch too, despite his brother's protests not to. The branch breaks, the elder son falls into the lake below it and eventually develops pnuemonia or some serious lung infection.
While dying, he asks (I think) to be buried with his mother.
It was an old movie, something from the 60s or 70s, but in colour. I hope someone can provide me with the title based on the above (rather hopeless) description. Thanks.
