Hey guys, sorry this is probably a really dumb question, but can I play a Blu-Ray in a standard DVD drive for my computer?

Nope.
You need a Blu-Ray player.

Offering enhanced sound capability, high-resolution imagery and tremendous storage capacity, Blu-ray DVDs are transforming the home theater experience. In order to play a Blu-ray DVD movie, you must have a HD television, Blu-ray DVD player and special HDMI cables. Blu-ray Movies will not play on a standard DVD player.

Quote from Blockbuster Online. The same goes for HD- DVDs. There are two completing platforms (Blu-Ray and HD/DVD) that play high definition films. The "jury is out" as to which of the platforms will prevail. (Remember Betamax? Remember 45 r.p.m. records with the big holes in the middle?)

There is a player which has provision for both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. I have also read that some people think that DVDs will eventually come out one side Blu-Ray, the other HD-DVD (like they used to have standard/widescreen) on one disk.

Don't you also need a tv compatible with Blu-Ray (Hi-def or something) to get the picture? I mean, it will PLAY but what's the point if the picture is crappy?

But that's not really the question...
I want to play a Blu-Ray on my computer. And I know it can be done. I can go to Tiger Direct and by a Blu-Ray burner for my computer I was just curious as to whether I can can straight up play in my regular old DVD drive for my computer.
