I am new to this forum and just here looking for other people's opinion on different things.

How many of you all think that we should omit the little phrase, "In God we trust" on all US currency.

I would change it to, "In god we trust.....all others pay cash!" Laughing

Seriously though, I don't think that it is an appropriate saying on a VERY official document. That saying is not inclusive of all its citizens, those who don't believe in a god, those who are not sure, and those who don't care one way or another.

Kneejerk politics put that phrase there. I don't think it can now be easily removed. I think it's inappropriate also.

"In god we trust" is not specifically Christian, but could apply to all sorts of gods. The point is, that not all citizens acknowledge a god, any god.

I don't know. For me, it's fine. I believe in God. For others, it's not.

It would be like our money saying "In Santa we trust" Not everyone still believes in Santa.

Would that bother me? Probably not. But I am pretty laid back.

I think we should for once and for all simply remove religion from government. Religious people should have complete freedom to worship in any way they see fit, but why mix it into the government?

I also agree that it is inappropriate.
It could be phased out as new coin designs are implemented.

I think it should be taken off.... not because people who are not christian dont like it...

but because it paints an image of the country that might not be accurate.

This country isnt all about god, christianity, or trusting an outside entity.
Yet, ALLLLLL of our money implies it is.

I didn't follow the news closely - there were recently some new dollar coins that were released. Do they still say "In God we trust"?

Yes, but along the edge.

I am a Buddhist. Non-Christian countries would not be appreciative of the slogan attached to our currency. I'm not crazy about it either

Not to mention that the statement is patently false.

That much for phasing it out any time soon... Sad
My opinion is that this kind of superstitious stuff is inapropriate on a 21st-century country's currency. It's not only superstitious, but it's also false. It's supposed to represent the whole country and its people.

Well how about "We don't trust anybody" then?

Can anyone think of an appropriate phrase that would represent
the whole country and its people?

Don't worry guys, the fact that the phrase went from the face of
the coin to the edges seems like "phase 1" of removing it to me.

(to my dismay, I might add Rolling Eyes )

What makes you think you need a phrase?

Having a phrase that excludes all "non-God" people seems counter to all the principles of inclusiveness of minorities one would expect of America.

It's more like a phrase you expect on the currency of the Vatican, or Iran, than that of a union of democratic states.

But if you have to, how about going back to old one?
Quote:

In 1956, the Cold War was in full swing, and the anti-Communist suspicion of the McCarthy era was at its height. Partly in reaction to Communism (which was commonly associated with atheism despite being merely devoid of an official religion), the 84th Congress passed a joint resolution to replace the existing motto with "In God we Trust." According to United States Code, Title 36, Section 302, the new motto officially displaced the original 180 year-old national motto "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of Many, One)
Wiki.

To me, that says..."United"...."States".

They accidentally left In God We Trust off of some of the new dollar coins. They have been selling on Ebay for $50 each.

You do have a point Eorl.

I always wondered what happened to that ol' E. Pluribus Unum!

BTW, your quote mentioned that the change to "In God We Trust" was partly in reaction to Communism. Something I never knew.

I wonder what the other "parts" were.

I, myself, have no problem with E. P. U., but it is a shame that so many people wouldn't have the slightest idea about what that means!
