Mention has been made of the Roman Catholic clergy in Ireland.
Is this story getting any traction anywhere other than on the Emerald Isle?

It's been pretty big in the UK press and on TV.

In Germany, it was in the news more than a week ago.

I've just been watching Germany v Portugal.

Why do these big, strong, hardy German players roll about on the floor like girls?
What a display. Shameless cheating.

And they managed to spoil the game.

What is Ronaldo actually doing as profession?

@Walter Hinteler,

Quite. They could win the game without all the play-acting. In fact, they already had.
This is a cancer in the game and it should be dealt with as such.

@McTag,
Pepe did that, he lost his temper and threw the game. He's supposed to be a bloody professional on shitloads a year. His red card was for headbutting, something he did do.

All lends credence to 3rd referee.

@izzythepush,

That was more a Maori greeting than a head butt.
The injured German, who had been at death's door, suddenly miraculously recovered his sense of pride, did he not. His attempted trickery was exposed. A sad farce, bringing nothing but discredit to the sport.

It didn't spoil it for me Mac. I backed Germany at £20 a goal giving a 0.6 of a goal start. 4--0 wins me 3.4 goals, i.e. £ 68. Those guys are nothing like girls.

The Test Match was best though. I had a tenner on England at 11--2 when they still needed 7 wickets. After lunch. Phew. I lost as you might know but it was very entertaining. The Sri Lankan last man was given out by the umpire lbw on the second last ball of the last over and he reviewed the decision and the slow-mo showed he had edged it onto his pads. So the decision was reversed and it ended a draw.

As each side has only two reviews the match was saved by earlier batsmen who had not requested a review which they are all often sorely tempted to do.

It's all too much really. Royal Ascot starts tomorrow. All these chaps thrashing their guts out after thousands and thousands of hours of arduous training just to buy better cheesecake. If I didn't bet on them I would sob my heart out.

And now it's Newsnight.

About 30-odd years ago I remember English referees in charge of English matches used to order the physios to come on and drag any ground-writhers off to the sidelines for treatment while the game went on, one man short, great!
Although they quickly miraculously recovered, they suffered the "penalty" of having to wait for a dead ball situation before the ref waved them back on.
I'm not sure but I gather that sensible approach was later relaxed by the FA and the writhers held sway again.

@Romeo Fabulini,
It is to give the other 21 players a bit of a breather and time for refreshment Romeo.

One might have thought that a wannabee footballer would empathise with footballers rather than demonstrate what a tough, no nonsense chap he is. Maybe they discarded you all those years ago after detecting such ridiculous opinions.

Can't you see how exhausted they all look compared to NFL players? I can understand women talking like that but not blokes.

In my trial game for Leicester City FC in 1969 I was - ahem - too busy hitting the back of the net twice in our 4-2 victory over the other triallist team to bother writhing around like a nancy-boy..Smile
Ground-writhers might have deep-seated pychological weaknesses, maybe it's a cry for help, or a mini-nervous breakdown, or maybe a homosexual perversion manifesting a desire to obtain sexual pleasure from writhing in agony in front of a zillion TV viewers..
Speaking of homos, many American Football players no doubt get erotic pleasure from being decked out in all that armour plating and roughly manhandling each other, many even effeminately take the field wearing makeup..Smile

So, what is the German opinion of Irish nuns disposing of their charges in this way?
Or should we wait for the outcome of the government's investigation?

@McTag,
I can't remember having read/heard any opinion.
It's a similar foreign news like those from children scandals in homes in Austria (Vienna) and the Channel Islands (Jersey) for the media.

What's your point Mac?

I imagine German opinion is much like your own. And mine.

@spendius,

I suppose my point is that there was a worldwide scandal when the sexual abuse of minors by RC clergy was brought to light, in America, in Britain and elsewhere, and it was endlessly debated..even maybe causing a pope, who was responsible for the non-action following the deeds, who was responsible for dealing with the individual cases, to pack it in. And in America, the church had to pay massive sums in damages.

And in this case, nothing like as much publicity or debate. But equally serious in my view.

America, and Britain, now allying themselves with Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

You couldn't make it up.
