@izzythepush,
All of England's oppressed Celtic neighbors were in the habit of teaming up with whatever European country happened at the moment to be a threat to the British. The Scots most frequently with the French: the Irish were more sorely oppressed and would take their friends wherever they could find them.

On a larger scale this same tactic was a key instrument in the preservation of the British Empire (their alternating aliances with the Russians or the Ottomans for example), so you have no basis for this criticism without indulging in some rather serious hypocrisy

'The Auld Alliance': actually that's the reason why you found/find "Ecosse" on many Scottish registered cars as nationality sign. (In English it would be "Albany" or the Gaelic "Alba" by the way.)

In this moment, there's a really interesting tennis match in Paris: I wonder, if the Scottish player will loose it or the English win ... against Kohlschreiber from Germany (5th set) Wink

You're not displaying that famous English sense of humour. I get so much crap from Romeo, I had to give him both barrels. Anyhoo I modified that remark later, about everyone hating the English.

@Walter Hinteler,

It's a funny thing about the "Auld Alliance": it's quite well known about in Scotland, and in France they've never heard of it. The Jacobites were catholic, much of Scotland at the time adhered to the "old religion", and so the alliance with our nearest catholic neighbour was a cert.
BTW has anyone else read "An Instance of the Fingerpost"? It's good.

@Walter Hinteler,

We'll lose to a German*, so it must be a Scottish player.

*they try too hard.

@McTag,
Which gives me the chance to post some music from 2012, played by pipes and drums and the "town band" from my native town (on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the town's marksmen club (St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft von 1412 - the Saint Sebastian Marksmen Confraternity of 1412)

@McTag,
The match is suspended (7:7 in 5th set), too dark by now.

To be accurate, the Auld Alliance lasted from 1295 to 1560, officially, but In 2011, British historian Dr Siobhan Talbott claimed the Auld Alliance was never actually revoked after all.

@Walter Hinteler,

There's been a good TV series here recently about the Hanovarian British monarchs.
We should have had Sophia, was it, but she died suddenly, so we got George I

@McTag,

Hey does anyone get The Times and have you seen what Giles Coren wrote about obesity and nutrition in the USA? He's a restaurant critic and the restaurants were highly regarded, paradoxically, but he was very scathing, and very droll, about the national diet. Shame I can't link it here, its subscription only now.

@McTag,
Try to get it. We love to read the work of British critics regarding our cuisine!!

Our current emperor's wife has been haranguing us for some time about our bad eating habits, and has reacted rather badly to widespread suggestions that she piss off.
